The UN

It seems to me that the concept of the UN is nice but as an organisation its pretty damn pathatic. Its power structure is TOTALY dependent on independant nations w/thier own agenda's. As long as it continues to be like this it will NEVER be more than a debate club w/little to no bite.
Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

The UN has never stopped a war, brought peace etc. It can be argued that it has been a hinderence to peace by hand wringing and indescision.

Any humantarian aid it provides can be done by private organizations.

We should pull out of the UN and seek alliances with Nations who support our interests.

The UN is a joke. All it provides for is to allow insignificant Nations to feel important.

Look at the security council. Why is france a permanent member? They arent a real world power, not economically or militarily. They werent a real "power" after the second world war. Then look at India the second largest nation in the world.

When HAS the UN STOPPED a conflict? WHEN has it achieved anything that can be construed as a success? Its simply a collection of pie-holes wasting O^2.

Its irrelevant and used as nothing more than a platform for chaos. It hardly brings any sort of unity. There are NO treaties w/the UN... its based on so called international law that means nothing unless it enforces said nation's agenda.

NATO is much more relevant.... but it can be argued that even NATO lately is on the way out.

A NEW alliance is called for.... something that ties nations togather much more strongly vie economics and military might.
Its needs to force nations to contibute hard cash and soldiers when needed. It needs to have a clear agenda that deals w/the mission of that organisation itself that will not be influnced by individual agenda's of various nations.

hmm, one might consider a Super-NATO, democracies only, but doesnt seem to be much need for collective security these days against conventional cross border agression.  It might be a mark of prestige for a government to get into this club, or mark of shame to be thrown out, but can't think of much for it to do that existing groups of nations aren't already doing.

The UN did not STOP the Korean War. Once again this brings up the uselessness of that Organisation. The US and several staunch allies provided the forces to FIGHT the war. The UN collectively achieved nothing.

The UN is less than nothing w/out American backing.

Edited, had to read up on Timor :)

East Timor is an aberration and it, the UN, managed to have one success due to the sheer "international smallness" of the problem. Other nations had little to no agenda concerning this nation thus the infighting often seen was not a concern. This is not the 'rule" for the UN. Also for once they, the UN, provided enough resources to succeed.

If you wish to see what happens when not enough resources are allowed, provided look at Somalia.

UN is pointless if it doesn't do anything beyond saying "hey, you, country ruled by despotic leader, don't do that.  If you don't stop, we will pass more resolutions."
