Finally saw this one on IFC.  I am really prejudiced against the genre but it grabbed me and pulled me in, like video crack.  Really shows off Kubrick's photography skills.  Some of the shots in that film, you could frame them and hang them up on your wall.  I swear to God he picked a couple of the actors because of their resemblance to subjects of famous paintings.

I like this film, especially the part where the family feigns the death of the British officer in the duel, thereby saving the family from financial ruin. Not Kubrick's best film, but good nonetheless.

I still think Kubrick's best film is 1957's "Paths of Glory"

If I recall correctly, that was the first film in which scenes were shot using only candles for lighting- some advance in film speed apparently.  One of the most beautiful movies ever made, and also one of the best depictions of 18th century warfare, too.

Yep I think you are right.  He must have used some fancy lenses too.
