Are these the ones that were on their own and not in a military "pool"?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

News reports state that they were out on their own, in two vehicles.

They said the Iraqis pretended to surrender to them then shot their cars full of holes.  They wanted their story, now they got it.

A recent radio blurb said a reporter had been car bombed in northern Iraq. A witness said another car pulled up right next to him, stopped, then Poof both were gone.

Four U.S. Soldiers Reported Killed in Central Iraq
Sat March 22, 2003 04:27 PM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - Four U.S. soldiers were killed on Saturday in central Iraq, according to a reporter from Britain's Sky TV who was traveling with them.
Journalist Colin Brazier said the reconnaissance scouts were ambushed while driving Humvee jeeps at the head of a column.

"Rocket-propelled grenades were fired, one at each Humvee, (they) killed both sets of occupants," he said in a brief live report on TV.

"There was a position we were heading to for refueling at about the same time -- it was clearly a coordinated attack...that came under mortar fire," he added.

"The RPG position has been cleared already...In fact, there was the extraordinary sight of local people actually pointing out some of those positions that were being fired from," Brazier said, speaking rapidly by satellite phone before he had to cut off.

Because the precise use of language is very important right now. I'm sure it's uppermost in their families' minds.

That's right. The correct or incorrect use of the word 'ambush' is hugely important to the event. I can't stress that enough.

am·bush n.

1) The act of lying in wait to attack by surprise.
2 ) A sudden attack made from a concealed position.
3) Those hiding in order to attack by surprise.
4) The hiding place used for this.
5) A hidden peril or trap.

I'd 3 and 5 pretty much describe the situation. I'm sure the TV crew were a bit surprised by the trap that was sprung.

shreck me. Why am I even arguing this point...

Reading that report Batz posted, it seems to me this war is not the walk over we thought it would be. There are some very determined Iraqis out there. I'm glad they are taking a cautious approach and hope casualties will be light. One US/UK/Ozzie soldier killed is one too many.

more common ground... every single coalition casualty is painful. it need not have gone down like this... and it remains the root of my disgust with chirac and france.

here's to hoping it's over soon.

cheers!

Im not anti-War, but I find it hard to have sympathy with a news crew thats working outside the borders of available military protection in a Combat zone.

Either they were the biggest idiots north of Basra or their employer is.

What did they expect the Iraqi's to do. Greet them with open arms? Surrender scam or not. Its hardly suprising that the soldiers, militia or occupied civilian forces cut down the nosy westerners at the first given opportunity.

After Tommy Franks interview yesterday an ITV guest was saying how disappointed he was with the lack of information. During the briefing, some of the media were whining about the briefing being 3 days late and the lack of information.

These guys obviously think that modern warfare is all about television and the same intrusive behaviour and blatant disregard they often show on the street gives them the same mistaken rights on the field of combat.

Dumb dumb dumb. Sounds like they were trying to circumnavigate the given rule book over there and get the scoop on the military when they suddenly found out the enemy isnt playing by the same nice rules as the coalition.

Sounds tough to say it, but it serves them right.
