Ok I did a clean reinstall of windows xp. Now I'm staring at it. Network up, internet up. No drivers installed. I really dont want to screw it up SO, do I even bother with SP1 or 1a as it is now?
Who needs it on a games machine? The only thing I think it does that I need is diectx 8.1a and (I think) USB2 Drivers. I just want to keep it clean, get it games ready.

I recently did a clean XP Home install followed by SP1, latest mobo drivers (Nforce 2.03), Nvidia 30.82 video drivers ,Intel NIC drivers, USR modem drivers, and finally all Windows updates except .NET and W Media 9.  I used XP native drivers for my SB Live Value sound card.  I turned off about 25 services using this guide and everything is working perfectly now.

My other Nforce box has been running XP Pro and SP1 since it came out with no problems.

There is a very long list of things that SP-1 and now 1a patches.

SP-1a the new one is identical to SP-1 except it doesn't give you MS Virtual Machine (VM)  This supports Java.  I don't really remember why they chose not to include it?

I guess occasionally over the years there has been a problem with upgrades.  However, it is usually fixed soon after and has seldom been more than a nuisance.

I personally felt like SP-1 sped up may machine.  Were I to reformat I would put it back on including VM.  Mileage May Vary,

Got it all up. Next ?. IRQ's. Device manager says sound card and video occupy IRQ 16 and 18 respectively. However at bootup, the  screen says they both are on IRQ 11?? This is something to do with xp IRQ management I presume?

Also both video and audio are sharing with USB Host Controllers(In device manager). I know there are conflicting opinions about this.

oh yeah, also I presume it's normal to have a "1394 net adapter " besides the regulat LAN card even though there is only one LAN  card installed?

Well.......

XP is actually very comfortable with all devices on 1 IRQ.  That said we're not :)

I really don't know a way around this but here's what I do.  I never just stuff the cards in the box and turn it on.  If you're not a gamer and you're doin' XP, stuff it and go! NP!
Before I reformat I try to have all the drivers saved to a CD.  You must start with the Video card.  Install it and add the others 1 by 1.  Now for the gamer, the Video card and the Sound card gives us the most grief so I will usually install the Sound card next.
So what can you do?  Well you can try to move them around in the Device Manager, You can not worry about it till it causes you grief:) You can reinstall all cards as I have outlined, You can wait to see if some else has a better idea.  I am no professional, just a somewhat knowledgable user so BEWARE

You have ACPI turned on. If you're worried about the two devices sharing a real IRQ then you'll have to change the PCI slot of one of them.

Personally, I would apply SP1 and all the updates, especially the security ones.

Well, that's it. EXCEPT theres always some bloody thing. When I go to power off the pc reboots instead! When I go to power down the second time it powers down ok. Jeez!

I've read about something to do with Roxio Easy CD Burner, but I don't have any CD burners installed yet. Can't find any evidence of it on the machine. I know there must be something that's not closing quick enough for that first shut down.
