OK this should be in the Internet Connection topic but there a few enough aussies around so I'm hoping I'll get a better response where there's more traffic.

Generally speaking which broadband company offers the best connection for AH in Oz (I'm in the Sydney area)?
A friend has Telstra ADSL but here seems to get disconnected a lot (and he doesn't play muc online except BF1942).

i got telstra adsl, seems to be connected most of the time, maybe he should use another dialer that reconnects like raspppoe.

I did a lot of research before I got adsl and came to the conclusion that Internode was the best ... http://adsl.internode.on.net/ They have their own forum on whirlpool ... http://www.whirlpool.net.au ... and the guy in charge, Simon Hackett, is very active there.

I have been with them since the middle of last year, no complaints whatsoever. I still get a couple of discos within Aces High a month, but nothing too serious. My ping to the main arena is usually around 260 - 280, no packet loss, and the net stat graphs in the game are always flat.

In the whole time I have been with internode I have had about 4 actual connection outages, and everytime it was because some gimp at telstra screwed something up.

You would have to pay me to be on telstra's crappy network. I have seen people on modems get better pings in counter strike than people with telstra broadband.

Bigpond cable here in Sydney, and usually pinging in the low to mid 200's.

Disco's can be a problem, and usually are constant throughout a session when they occur, but generally it's fairly stable.
As per usual, the netgraph/packet loss cops a hiding during peak times, but only HT moving his servers to Sydney would probably solve that problem

Telstra Bigpond ADSL here. No real complaints except that their customer support people have no idea (then agaqin, what call centre people do?). Connection problems have been few and far between, once everything was up and running from my end. I get the feeling that a large part of the equation is the local telephone exchange that you are connecting through. I live in Baulkham Hills, NSW and it seems to be a good exchange. I always have flat connx lines to AH and ping between 200 - 250 (always stable, depends on AH server).

If you are in a house and can get OptusNet CABLE then get it. It is better than any other broadband service in Australia bar none.

I've used it for AH and pings are about 220.

BTW thanks for the info about the Node... I am inches away from subscribing.

I was also going to suggest whirlpool.net,i'm interested to read your ping times all,im on iprimus dialup,56k,and i get a consistant ping of 290/310,i'm surprised to see how small a diff there is in ping times cable/dsl vs modem (don't get me wrong,i'd rather have any broadband than this thing )

The signal still has to travel halfway around the world to Texas and back so you will never get less than 200 ms ping from Australia. The biggest difference between dial-up and broadband is the quality of connection, has been much better for me. Less discos, less warping, less everything really with ADSL over dial-up.
