One of those sorties...

Been reading a lot lately about how many things people are peeved off by in this sim.  I just wanted to post about a really good sortie I had last night.

Flying for nits I upped from 5, which was under sporadic attack, in a pony with 75% fuel.  Someone had just called out to watch for goons approaching 5 so I was hoping for some easy kills to get me in the swing of things.

My wife had me afk for a few minutes so I set auto climb.  When I came back and looked around, hey presto!  Goon low on my 2 oclock and noone else around...  I did a nice lazy wing over, slid down over the shoulder of the goon to his 6 and gave him a 1/2 sec burst from about 300yds... boom!!!  #1

I noticed an F6 that had tried to catch me while attacking the goon.  He was between me and another low dot on the horizon so I immelmanned and dove past him, avoiding his clumsy HO attempt.  I drove straight at the low dot as the F6 tried to catch up.  He got distracted by another knight so I was free to chase the low con which turned out to be a tbm.  I attacked from high 7-6 got hits over the wing and tail of the tbm.  As I looped up and over for another pass he went into the drink... #2.

I then noticed another knight in a fight with a red pony who ran as I tried to engage.  We ended up in a 3 v 3 with another red pony and a spit and 2 other knights.  I pulled in behind a spit that was on the 6 of a friendly who had ignored my 6 calls as he was chasing the original red pony.  I saddled up on the spit and blew him to pieces (#3) as he got my countryman.  I then found myself dead 6 on the red pony and blew him up too... #4.

Looking around my countrymen had taken off after the last pony who was running as fast as he could towards friendly ack.  I noticed a lone B26 slightly above me headed for 5.  I stayed at my current level and bore in for a 90 degree deflection shot that all went into the belly of the plane (wow I couldnt miss this sortie!!!) and as I extended for another pass boom!!! #5.

At this stage I was down to 25% fuel and only had about 300 rnds left so I called winchester and started heading back to 5.  As I did so I saw another con approaching 5 slightly higher again so I thought I'd check it out.  It turned into a lancaster about 1k above me so I hit WEP and ran in to attack, thinking I'd make one pass to soften him up for the other defenders.  As I aproached the pilot saw me and dove away from me to bring his tail gun to bear on me.  I pulled in from his 8 and slightly above and let rip 100 rounds from about 150yds.  To my amazement I hit right in the centre of the fuselage!!!  As I pulled away thinking I'd RTB boom!!! #6.

After swapping a couple of words with Feenyx (countrymate who had seen my Lanc attack) about exactly what winchester meant, I made a soft landing at 5 with 6 kills and not a scratch on my pony.

I then proceeded to log as I had to go make dinner!

Now that's what I call a good sortie!
Anyone else had any good flights lately?

leaopard (yes, it is a typo)

PS My sorties later in the night were nowhere near as good...

Great sortie! <S>

I've taken to recording each of my sorties.  If I have one like this, I always log off and then make my wife come over and watch the replays.  She hates it

Haha yes you were impressive Leopard... kept killing everything before I could get to em!

I was goin in on the Lanc and saw you coming at it from just ahead of me at my 10oc, but remembered that you had called out rtb winchester.  Didn't really expect a pony with almost zero ammo to explode a Lanc on first pass, which is why I asked.  Nice shooting

Awww shucks Feenyx <shuffles feet shyly>.  It was just one of those sorties where everything fell into place.  Usually I empty a whole plane load of ammo and don't hit anything...  Still learning the whole gunnery thing.

Anyone else got some stories to share?

Yea I was having a great , almost quiet sortie in my B26 this morning that ended with me killing leopard, but him crippling me. After that I think he nailed me 3 times in a row. That was great skill you showed in the P51.<Salute>

<Salute> guys and thx for the kind words, but...

I was hoping to get some reports from everyone here describing their favourite sorties of late.  The kind of "...I dropped in behind the 109 and set him ablaze with a long sustained burst..." stories that all of us would be fighter pilots love to read.

Doesn't need to be a chest thumping 30 kill story, just a good read about a sortie that was memorable...

Had a pretty fun 4 kill sortie this afternoon at P20.

I'd come up from with my Yak from the nearest base and was heading to 20 because I figured the Bish may want the newly captured port back before we got their CV.  On my way there... Pongo calls out for help as I'm nearing 10k about 1 sector away.

I arrived a few minutes later.  We still had a couple surviving Osties at the field, but it looked as if the entire Bish nation was coming at it from 19.

Another friendly was in the area and was engaged with two 190s and a Spit.  One of the 190's succumbed to an Osty, so I focused on the spit.  I caught him just as he was coming around and got a brief snapshot into his fueselage.. it was enough to scare him off of the other friendly.

Unfortunately, an F4u-1C and a Tiffie showed up and made things a little more difficult.  I'd lost track of the other friendly in the ensuing cloud of red and was now playing the "let me get close enough" while looking backwards more than forwards.

I focused on the tiffie, because he was flying best of the bunch.  I'd rather him be in front of me than behind.  I got behind him a few times, but could not close below 400 yards for a decent shot.  The F4u-1C eventually brushed me off of him, but proceded to fly by me and turn to shoot the VH ack.  I caught him coming off of the ack.

As I came around, the typhoon was in front of me again.. jigging like a mad <insert jigging analogy>.  I was starting to close range just as I saw the incoming B-17 at 3k.  He was 1k away from me and starting to open up.  I had to pay attention to him.

I came around on the still close buff because he'd stopped shooting.  I opened up inside of 300 yards and tore off a wing and tail surfuace, but not before he'd dropped his 500 lb bombs on one of the osties.

As the B17 was going down, the tiffie came back into the picture.  I managed to glue myself to his 6 and take him out.  At the same time, I was awarded a kill on what I assume to be the spit I'd damaged earlier in the engagement.  I don't know if he was the flash that went by me or not.

As I killed the Typhoon, another plane was coming in on me (p-51?).  I managed to avoid him and noticed that a P-38 was about to get me at a very low energy state.  I managed to get my nose down just in time to escape serious damage, though a couple of pings rattled my plane.  We were pretty low and the 38 didn't dare try to follow the move.  He was just too fast.

I took that as my que to escape.  We'd gotten CV20 by now and it was being distanced from the port.  I started heading for it and its protecting yellow umbrella.  Unfortunately, a N1K was now closing rapidly.  He was 3k back, but closing at 500 yards per second.  I wasn't sure if I'd make it back or not.  At d1.5, he broke off and I was thankfull.. I do believe he could have caught me.

I returned to the nearest field and landed.  Another successfull sortie in the books.

I had what classifies for me as a "successful" sortie today....

I mamaged to somehow kill two F6F's (one of them was unaware I snuck up on his 6), and managed to land.

For me, that's doing good--I suck and I know it

I guess success is in the eye of the beholder.

Well leopard, since I never brag, but you are persuasive, this is one of my best.

Last Sunday I invited my good buddy beemer over to check out my new monitor, best way to show him is go out on a quick sortie.

I flew off A8 to A27 just to check scenery, on the way there I came across a JU88, bounced the poor bugger bad. I climb back up to 15k and spot a lanc that just lifted off of A27.

Another perfect bounce, man I say to beem, this was just supposed to be a Sunday drive, quiet no excitement.

No sooner do I say that and a tiffie pops up and starts circling his base, I nose over drop in and hammer him as he trys to roll over and down.

I say to beem this guy wants me dead, he'll come back up. Sure enough, I try and duplicate my last tactic but this gut was prepared and broke early, only managed 3 or pings. I look down I,m outta ammo, damn. I aapologize to tiffie and head for our cv group.

He won't let it go. I say to beemer, watch I can let him close as we get closer to our ack and then drag him up into it.

Sure enough up he comes, loses all his E at 900 off my 6. I roll over and down staight into my cv, he does a flat spin all the way into the blue stuff. My 3 or 4 pings earlier earned mee the kill.

I go back to A8, log off, and smile thinking of my next Sunday drive.
That was one of my best sorties as far as pure fun goes.

Today I logged in and found Nim attacking 19. He had
already bombed most of it and asked me for CAP. Boring
part short, I get there, strafe an ack.. bullets do no
damage to ack and I die. The goon we had coming also
dies. I re-up, fly towards 19. FH regens on 19. Nim
ups in a goon for 19 about 10(?) minutes after I take
off. I get to 19 and am at 8K in a P47D-25 with the
light 8gun loadout. I see a dot, he's a quick climber
so I feared it was an N1K2. As I get closer, I get to
a little below his alt and see it's a zero! I think to
myself "well, toejam.. this is gonna be a short
ride...". I make a pass at him HO(don't fire) and he
dives under then pulls up into a dive to loop behind
me. I maintain my heading then someone knocks on the
door and I have to answer it. After about 3 minutes, I
come back and I'm 3.4K away from the Zero. I make a
slow turn and reverse into him. He does the same thing
as last time and I converse with Nim as I extend away
again(now I'm at 6K). Nim says drag anywhere but SW,
so I drag the Zero back towards 19 where I spy two
lower dots. I dive down on the lowest dot which is a
P51, I let a burst fly and he goes into the drink.
Kill #1. By now the Zeke is out of icon range because
he decided to climb, but I know it's only a matter of
time before he comes back. I see the higher pony at my
12Oc about 3K above me 3.4K away. I'm following
him(sort of) towards A8 hoping he doesn't see me. By
now the Zeke dove on me and was sitting 2.2K behind me
but not closing. Then the damned Pony sees me and
turns towards me(by now I'm halfway between A19 and
A8). I get low on the water and begin lazy turns while
the pony sits behind me, but doesn't gain and I slowly
extend to 800yds. He sits behind me getting a few
pings here and there as he sprays, then the damndest
thing happens. I see him smoking and firing off
rockets. Well atleast he'll run out of oil soon, I
think. Then I hear "KABOOM" and look behind me to see
a big splash of water. He had bombed himself at
200ft. (manuever) kill #2. Now I've got this Zeke
behind me and I see a C47 near the Zeke behind me. I
had seen a dot earlier, but in my attempts to dodge
the Pony I lost sight of it. So now I'm thinking..
Zeke's 1.6K behind me.. I've got 75% of gas left in my
main tank and about 15% left in my aux tank. What the
hell I'm having fun so far. I extend to roughly 3.xK
away from the Zeke, then reverse back into his
direction. He jinx the head on(this time I'm blazing
away to deter him from being dumb), and he does the
same maneuver as before. There's the goon at my 12Oc
on the deck 2K away. Only problem is, I'm coming in at
his 1Oc, so it's gonna be a helluva deflection shot.
Nope! This fella makes it easy for me and turns into
me exposing the entire top of the goon. I spray away
and watch him disentegrate then crash into the water.
Kill #3. I call out to AsEr who is near A8 that I've
got a Zeke trailing me and I get on the deck heading
towards A8. The Zeke, however, breaks away and turns
back towards friends. Well since AsEr came to my
assistance and I still had gas and ammo I wasn't about
to leave him. I haul the jug around into an immelman
and head towards the two dots. As we get closer it
becomes 3 dots, but the Zeke is the only one within
icon range. The Zeke fakes a HO with AsEr and does the
same thing to me, except this time he loses sight of
me (I went into a loop higher than him) and he rolls
inverted after completing a loop right in front of me.
He begins to turn, but it's too late, I let my 8 .50s
rip his rice paper airplane apart and *BOOM*. Kill #4.
Now there's a P51 and C47 in the area, the P51 makes a
pass on AsEr but misses. Then he comes at my Head On
and begins blazing away. I give a quick jinx to the
left then the right and throw the jug into a loop. I
come down directly behind the P51 faster than him and
only 400yds off his 6. He pulls tighter, but it's
already too late. I throw down 2 notches of flaps,
yank the stick back till I can't see him and let my
bullets fly. Kill #5 and AsEr kills the goon a second
later.
The fight lasted for a good 15-30 minutes and I was
surprised how well the Jug was doing considering I was
all alone. Then Nim tells me he's got A19 even though
a 190 was launching.

I land at A8, 50% gas in the main tank, 240rnds in the
first ammo bank and 268 in the second ammo bank.
-SW

I sent this out to my squad and just copied it here. I just thought it was a really cool sortie. One thing that should be mentioned was fighters (bishop) kept taking off from A19 and flying North ignoring that little radar bar that indicated Nim was in the area. He got to the field while other plane's were leaving, landed and got himself an easy capture.
