Reuters have just reported that the British commander of the forces in Umm Qasr says the town is now under Coalition control and is considered 'safe'.

I still cant believe that this little "city" with only 2000 inhabitants and 200 soldiers has hold out so long.

WTG British Army which finally has won the battle of Umīr Qasr.

But the docklands are as big as Southampton. And Southhampton has a huge dockland - it used to be major port of the British Empire.

The Iraqis counterattacked out of Basra last night. The 7th Armoured Division (Desert Rats) beat them off with air support.

Basra has now been declared a target of military significance.

I still consider this stupid and senseless war as a big mistake and Bush one of the greatest idiots of human history.

I also think that Iraq will be after the war in total chaos and civil war like Afghanistan is today.

But after this stupid and senseless war has started, there is no alternative than a clear and fast military victory against Saddam. Otherwise Saddam will become a martyr or hero in the arab world, which must be avoided.

So I hope that this war will be very soon over and I am glad that this tiny town of Umr Qasr is now under allied control.

I am still shocked how strong the iraqui resistance is. I didnt expected them to surrender in 10thousands, but I had expected that at least the iraquis in South-Iraq would start a rebellion against the sunnite-Saddam troops and welcome the allied troops.

But this has not happened. Obviously the Shiites have not forgotten the betrayal of the USA in 1991 when they were asked to make a rebellion and didnt received the promised help of the USA.

But when the allies take Basra within the next week this war could be over very soon.

I'll take that as being aimed at me.

Firstly I was stating fact. There was no personal opinion at all, which I'm sure you're dissappointed with.

Secondly, there are US Marines under the command of the British forces at Umm Qasr, so your poke wasn't even accurate.

Thirdly, I was against the reasons for kicking off this war, definitely. I think waiting to the Autumn, making sure we had a northern Front would have paid dividends and made it much easier for UN backing to be achieved...

... but having said that, I am 100% committed to supporting the coalition forces now they are in there. You think I want to see them dead? You think I enjoy seeing POWs paraded on TV? You think I want to see the US/UK/AU humbled in some kind of pullout?

If you do, then you're a fool.

Where the f(*k do you get off telling us that the US betrayed them. You better GD look at UN. Oh..and where the hell where thier Arabic brothers? Answer this please?
Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

LOL - help for the shiite iraquis from their Arabic brothers?

Mister - go and read something about sunnites and shiites, before you write such a nonsense.

The shiite islam is a modification of the islamic religion done by Iran shortly after it was conquered by the arabs in the 7th century.

In Iran the vast majority of the people are shiites.

And the only arab country in the world where there are also a significant number of shiites is Iraq.

The last thing which would happen is that one of the arab nations (where nearly 100% of the muslims are sunnites) would help shiites which were often defined in history by the sunnits as heretics.

Its a fact that in 1991 Bush jr. asked the kurds and the shiite iraquis to revolt against Saddam.

He promised support from the US forces which just had captured Kuwait.

But this help never arrives. Instead Saddam was allowed to use his air force and helicopters to crush down the rebellions.

The losses were enormeous. More than 100000 people died in the massacres of Saddam and their marchs to rescue camps in Turkey, Syria and Iran. Then - too late - the no-flight-zones were established.

The only nation which would have helped the iraqui shiites would have been Iran.

But because Iran is a non-arab-country and the USA didnt wanted to see the shiite majority of Iraq ruling Iraq and becoming an iranian satellite, Iran was "asked" not to intervene.

So - the 1991 massacre of the iraqui shiites was definitevly mainly a fault of Bush sr who first asked them to revolt against Saddam, promised help and didnt kept his promise.

The UN hasnt promised the shiites help if they make a rebellion against Saddam.

Now - is your question answered ?

No..it did't answer crap as your not seeing the whole picture.

IF WE HAD BEEN ALLOWED TO FINISH THE GD JOB it would of been moot. Instead the world said..enough ie the UN and our Arabic "allies".

Saddam used forces, weapons etc that he wasnt suppose to be suing but the UN ignored this... they watched the slaughter and did NOTHING.

The US couldn't act indendently. Well..we could of but it would of started the same crap we're seeing now w/the UN and many other nations.

IF we had SUPPORTED them DIRECTLY or even INDIRECTLY it would of been blasted vie the UN as an attempt to do what we are doing now.

Dont hang the blame game on us. We screwed the pooch no doubt but the UN was a prime policy maker in the Gulf War.
