tank gunnery training
« on: March 25, 2003, 09:34:03 AM »
Hello,

is there any way for training tank gunnery (in TA or offline)? Since GV's don't have distances indicated for me it's always trial & error (mostly error;-) to get a hit. How can I improve?

Thanks

One thing I do is center my mouse cursor in the upper pintle gun's site, then use that as my "night site" in the tanks' main gun barrel.  I use zoom to spot targets, then focus it in and out to change my field of view.  After awhile you'll get a good idea of distance based on the hash marks on the main gun's site.

This part I don't understand ... All tanks when viewing thru the main gun (position #2) have the distance indicators in the sight. Are you saying that you don't have these distance indicators while viewing thru the main gun ?

Re-read your post and now I understand. Gauging the distance to another GV comes with spending many hours in a tank. After awhile, you will be able to gauge by the size of the GV (when fully zoomed in), approximately how far it is away from you and then you use the sight to take a ranging shot and then send the others home.

Sometimes when there is aircraft support, and they dive in on a GV, look at their icon distance indicator and that will give you a real good clue to the distance of your target.

Sounds to me like he's talking about the lack of icons for enemy GVs.

There is no range-finder in the game unless you are offline (or in TA) and are shooting at friendly tanks.  In that case, you can see the icon range for a friendly, but that won't help you in the MA.  There are never any enemy icons on GV's.

The key is to develop a feel for what a tank at X range will look like.  To do that, try and keep a consistent level of zoom when looking at an enemy target.  I know that I zoom right in to max, judge the distance, then zoom out if necessary.  That way, when I'm guesstimating the range, I always know I'm looking at a target that is at the same zoom level.

I wonder why PT Boats show a range icon? They are considered GVs.

Side note:  The numbers on the main gun range scale are in hundreds of yards.  Getting a friendly plane to overfly an enemy tank will allow you to know the range until you are used to estimating range based on tank apparent size.

Oh Soda there is a range finder of sorts built into the tank sight.  :) Once you get comfortable using it you can get the approxitmate distance to your target so that you have them ranged within a few shots.

You can do this by judging how much of the between the listed ranges the target fills (height) .  I have a pic of what I'm talking about around here someplace, if I can scrounge it up I'll post it.  :)

NetAces has a good write up on ground vehicles that's worth taking a look at.

Soulyss,
I had something similar on a piece of transparancy paper that I had marked up with vehicle heights at different ranges. You could hold the transparancy paper up to the screen, get an estimate of range based on vehicle height, then adjust and fire.  After using it a couple of times I found that I could simply estimate without it since I knew what to look for from that point on.
