So I just bought the game.

I thought I'd ask you if you know what settings would work best with my rig.

AMD 1800+
512 ram
GF2

Is it possible to run on 1024/760 -32 or should I try it on -16?

I'd really like to keep the resolution at least 1024/760 but is it possible?

Any ideas? What kind of graphic settings are you using for your rigs?

I think you should use 16bit colours, 32bit doesn't make a lot of difference, only the smoke loops a bit better. 512MB is barely enough if you are using WIN98, with XP you need more. Too low memory causes stutter, especially online.

hmm ok, 16 bit it is.

I'm running XP btw, does that mean I need to cut back on something more than that?

Cutting back wont help much if you get stutter, GF2 setting in IL2setup should be fine. I have a similar setup and I had to get more memory(768MB) to run it smoothly.

Hm, that is bad news. I dont think I can buy another ram chip without losing my AMD 1800+ speed. For some reason it will only work in 1800+ if I have one slot used.

Do I look like a nerd? :)

I have no idea. Its a fairly new one, bought it about a year ago, and it is a board where I can use my AMD processor. It has three RAM slots. But if I use more than one, the AMD processor will not run in 1800+ mode, instead I have to run it at 1050 or something like that.

edit...or maybe it's only two ram slots...not sure now.

Heh, I had similar problem when I bought  AMD 2000+ a week ago to my ASUS motherboard. If you can find out if your motherboard is ASUS a7Vxxx series I might be able to help.

he's got 512MB and you tell him to buy more RAM?  What the hell is this, a WWIIOL thread?  :D

Hortlund, you only need more than 512MB on the Finland map- and at any rate I honestly do not believe _ANY_ graphics card has enough on board memory to handle the city textures of Leningrad and the outlying fortresses of the city.

It's the biggest resource hog and apparently the beta testers didn't take into consideration the need for lots of repititve low detail city textures rather than lots of individual high detail textures and this leads to lots of lagging as textures are transferred from system RAM to video RAM.

Be sure to select the GF2 settings on the video tab, THEN go back and select custom from the drop down menu. Where it says "texture compression" select S3TC from the drop down menu. This should help quite a bit.

I'm not sure with the GF2, but with my GF4 32bit is faster than 16bit because that's what it was optimized for. However, I believe people have better success with 16bit using the GF2. 1024x768 is supposedly the optimized resolution for Il2/FB.

My system isn't much higher than yours, it's an AMD 2000+ running 768MB PC133 SDRAM and a GF4, and I can run the game at full details in OpenGL EXCEPT for perfect water. Don't use the stencil buffer, it'll slow your system down dramatically.

When setting up IL-2:FB I selected GF3/4 settings in the drop down list as I have a GF3 (there was no separate GF3 option in the drop down box) my framerate was pretty poor, I tried everything to get better FPS by altering the detail settings etc then I went back to the main options and selected 'Default Settings' in the drop down box and IL-2:FB plays really well even with my trackIR running (which BTW is absolutely superb in IL-2:FB)

Maybe there are differences between setups but I have exactly the same setup as you do. I had serious stutter issues with every map with 512MB, the game would pause always when i fired weapons and otherwise I had constant little stutter. Upgrading to 768MB solved these problems, but I still cant run mountains map when online, Finland is no problem.

I honestly can't say as my system already had 768MB before I started with FB, but I've heard people running the game fine on 512MB of system RAM on the standard maps except for the Finland map.

The online mountain map doesn't run well on my system either, I'm not sure if it's the mountains (high poly count) or vast amounts of the triple layer forests- either way it's just extremely slow.

As for the constant stuttering, you probably already have it selected- but have you enabled the S3TC texture compression? Selecing the default GeForce settings won't enable S3TC for some reason. Also, if you use the Stencil Buffer (I do since it looks nice and there's barely any FPS impact with a GF4) be sure to uncheck the Polygon Stencil setting.

So can anyone explain to me why my refresh rate drops from 85Mhz in windows to 60Mhz in IL2?

In the same resolutions and color depths Hortlund?

Be sure your desktop isn't 32bit color, because if you run Il2 in 16bit mode that uses an entirely seperate set of settings... so you have to switch your desktop to 16bit, go to the Refresh setting and change it from adapter default to 85Hz.
