read a few artciles about DU rounds and there poisining of the area...dam..Iraq-Saudi and Kuwait are probably covered with uranium dust...they fired dam near 1 million rounds of just 30 mil caliber alone!!!

This book was claiming all the "Desert Storm Syndrome" was from DU rounds.

1) there is no bettr/stinger metal to use then DU?

2) no cheaper metal then DU to use?

3) Great way to get rid of DU?  other then just burying it?

4) Do armores wear any prtection while loading these rounds? or is is safe when in a solid form?

Hmmm, seems maybe I should be able to deal swift death to Tigers even?

When it says rocket firing attack planes weren't successful in destroying tanks. How come typhoons of the 2nd TAF killed 135 or so in one day - August 1944?

as always tho, interesting read! :D

This is dealt with in detail in 'Flying Guns'. For a whole raft of reasons, both RAF and USAAF ground-attack planes overclaimed by at least ten times. British Operational Research teams descended on the battlefields immediately afterwards and examined each tank to see what knocked it out. Very few were hit by aircraft weapons. The official estimated of the hit probability of the RPs fired by Typhoons against tank-sized targets was 0.5%, i.e. one in 200. Even under ideal conditions in training, they couldn't do better than 5%.

'Flying Guns: WW2' was on its way to distributors when the publishers went into receivership. I know that some got out and are on sale, but I don't know if any got across the Atlantic. Please let me know if you find one!

There is a lot of misinformation about DU. In its solid form, it emits hardly any radiation and what there is can be stopped by anything (even a coat of paint), so the DU cores within their containing shells are harmless.

When it hits armour plate, DU burns. The dust which results is potentially harmful if ingested or inhaled, because it is a poisonous heavy metal, like mercury or lead, so it can cause serious illness (just as mercury and lead can).

I came across a web page last night talking about one of the Ju88's successors (188,288,388,488) with a version mounting a huge 100mm plus gun called "Munchausen".  I havent been able to find that page again.  Has anyone else heard of this or know anything about it?

There was the 365mm calibre G 104 RCL, intended to be slung underneath a Ju 288 and to be fired in a dive, presumably against capital ships.

Ground testing showed that the plane wouldn't survive the blast.
