Hints on dropping troops with C47
« on: March 28, 2003, 10:34:05 AM »
Folks,

For the newbees --- JUst a few hints to help you drop troops with a C47 i.e. only what I do

My Approach :

1. Approach the town with an altitude of greater than 800ft of the town.

2. Set your salvo to 10 i.e. Press the / key and then use the command ".salvo 10"

3. Open Cargo Door ( O key) and cut throttle (75/80 %)

4. Switch to external view (F3 Key) then use the zoom keys ( Z key and then the [ and ] keys) to pull back the view (you should see your plane getting smaller)

5. When I am close to town then I use the ENTER key or the ZERO key on your keypad (varys on some keyboards) to switch my view to directly above the C47 i.e. I am looking down at the C47 toward the ground.

6. Just before I come over the town, VH etc I release troops.

7. You may cut the trottle a little further or put the aircraft into a slight climb and turn at this point to allow time for the troops to exit.

In this way the troops will always be over the target.

Just one thing to remember -- when dropping troups on a port or a town near the sea be careful not to drop them in the sea -- as I have done a few times    :-)

i.e. consider your approach before dropping them or land them

Hope this is useful

Great write-up, thanks!   Only bit I didn't realise was the looking straight down using keypad0.

Now, how about dropping troops with no outside views, as we had to during the Niemen scenario?  I found that very difficult to judge!  :)

Flos, the easiest way (I didn't even know about the external view til recently) is to come over the town as described above, rock over to one side to verify location, full power, pull back, drop troops while going straight up til you stall. The troops do a nice spiral drop thingie all around the maproom.

In a no outside view scenario I use a hammerhead move.  Dip wing -- look out lower window until edge of town is detected and then pull up into a hammerhead while dropping troops.  The only bad thing is the arc of troops spikes at about 2k AGL.

Setting salvo and delay help with that aspect.

Just one possible help.

Thanks, Horn, I'll try that.

Another trick is if the ammo bunker in the town is burning, the top of the smoke is the minimum altitude to drop. Without the smoke, you have to do the math and make sure that the troops are let out at a minimum of 800 Above Ground Level (AGL).

From an internal view, if I see the bunker smoking, I fly to the top of the smoke and as soon as I hit that, I pull straight up and release troops at the same time. Pulling straight up produces the "hammerhead" drop like dfl8rms described. Works every time.

That's my preferred method as well.  It makes it more difficult for LA-7s to come in and strafe all of the helpless troopers.

You guys have no style.
Come in hot & fast, about 1/4 mile from city cut throttle, aim just to once side or the other, the side with "road" is best.

Slide C47 wheels up down the road to a screeching stop. Drop troops.

Because they dn't have to hang in the air or run far they'll get in quicker.

Besides, its just more fun.

If your fanatic about points then wheels down, & once  field is captured taxi over to field to exit.

I tried the ".salvo 10" command but it did not work.  I may have not had the door open, yet if that matters, but I don't recall.

Salvo 10 should work, but of course you would need the door open too.....  :)

One thing to note when using an M3 for capture - if you release the troops, then jump to the gun, the troops will stop jumping out!  (Similar to way bombs stop dropping if you jump to a gun).  :)

Actually, you can set salvo anytime, doors open or closed. If you type ".salvo 10" into the radio buffer, the system should come back with a confirmation of your selection. You then need to open doors and use the key you have set for dropping bombs [default=b] to make things happen.

LOL, I didn't make myself very clear.  I mean he would need them open to drop the troops!  ;)

And quit peeping at me like that!  :o  :p

You guys are boring
Ya got to come in at 700 to 800 feet, chop throttle as you hit edge of town, pull straight up & drop troops, as last one exits-bail, go flat to ground, always a rush in F3 mode
hit tower button, go to hanger & up an attack plane-make sure it is attack mode, as you get map room capture you have just got an attack mode field capture, it will not show up in your individual score page, but is added on your squad totals :D

Flossy,

Try this...
At 50 ft AGL
200 to 225 mph
just before you cross into the town
cut the throttle
jerk the stick back (but don't bend your airplane)
at 125 to 250 AGL, pickle off the troops.

The first trooper will be at the map room before the last troop is out the door.  Momentum dose the work and it's all very fast.

Too dangerous for Niemen. Takes practice as you're very low on exit.  Don't jump to outside view, it's much harder to recover.

My two cents.......

LAND THOSE TROOPERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They tend to break their ankles on the wrecked bldgs in the town when landing!

I agree with the no gear option.  Gets you in quick and stopped fast!

If airdropping.....I come in LOW and FAST (thats relative to a GV that is...LOL)
Pop up at the edge of the town...have doors open, salvo set to 10,  external view all the way in til about 20 sec from drop....then back to internal view.....
When right at the edge of town at ground level REEF that stick back into your lap and head straight up!!!!!...when you get to 800' agl hit the button and let the troops fly!!!  I also cut the throttle once the 4th trooper is out that limits the altitude of the arc.  Works great for me!!!!!!!!!

:D
