Not really a problem. Most ISPs provide their users with
some web space. I am with broadband ADSL provider
http://www.legend.co.uk and get 20MB included in the price. All you need in order to upload files to your space is an FTP client. I use CuteFTP -
http://www.cuteftp.com -, which is quite adequate for this purpose.
Several advantages come about with using your own webspace. You can place an image anywhere you like instead of at the end, there is no limit to the file size, and no limit to uploaded file types. Be sure to upload files whose names are in lower case letters, or you will get a case mismatch problem. Some FTP clients (eg. Terrapin) warn about this, and offer to make the conversion.
As for why HTC did it - the message board seems to be on the same server as the game itself. Prevents us whining if we can't play the game due to server down! LOL But yes, space problems, and impact upon the game (lag) as all those picture files are uploaded/downloaded. They could have put the BBS on a separate server, but made the choice to disable pics instead.
