Gov. Mark R. Warner (D) has signed legislation to prohibit illegal immigrants from obtaining Virginia driver's licenses. The General Assembly also passed legislation this year to bar people who are in this country illegally from qualifying for subsidized in-state tuition at public colleges.

Maryland legislators, meanwhile, have been headed in the other direction. They've sent Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) a bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to get the relative bargain of in-state tuition rates, a measure Ehrlich threatens to veto. And House members voted last week to study the possibility of making driver's licenses available to those who are here illegally.

Not since 1994, when California voters approved cutting off state benefits to illegal immigrants -- a move later struck down by a federal court -- has their treatment been so sharply debated, observers say.

I'm sick of paying thru the nose for insurance on my car.. only to discover the illegal living across the street has gotten 6 tickets for operating an uninsured vehicle.. and operating without a license.

when the bastard runs over granmaw, they still won't deport his ass.

why?

the guy is sucking up housing and jobs LEGAL immigrants would love to have and do.. if they could find the work, or a place to live.

employers that use illegals should be fined substantially. illegals snagged in routine traffic stops should be delivered to INS, and INS should kick their tulips out.

Christ when are we gonna smarten up, and make citizenship desireable?

In a perfect world, it would be possible for hard working types to get citizenship in the US.  As it is, illegal is the only way some can hope to make it into this country.

Ya know a lot of them do jobs that legals wouldn't be willing to do.  And they do those jobs more efficiently and politely than a lot of other demographic groups I can think of.  Maybe it's different where you are Hangtime, but where I live, they grease the wheels of the economy.  I'm pretty sure any government benefits they get are more than made up by their contributions to our economy.

Also, have you taken a look at the requirements for legal immigration?  Even if you have a job already lined up in the US, the government makes it an incredible pain in the bellybutton to get over here legally.  Both the immigrant and the employer have to jump through a bunch of idiotic bureaucratic hoops.

when an illegal can get better benefits than a legal, better funding for an education than a legal, ignore the legal system with impunity, blow off requirements like state mandated insurance with impunity and when he's earned enuff tax free cash, just vanish back over the border with his cousin taking his place here... the system is busted, and needs to be fixed.

When my dad grew up the trades where a real career, he was a cabinet maker for 20 plus years, when his shop closed he could not find a job cause no one wanted a white guy for the job, it was all done by Mexicans for nothing.

Just about all the trades are like that now.. (well maybe not plumbing)

One more thing, without true border control, any plans to fight terrorism is a waste of time and money. When you can drive a bomb from Mexico to here, with ease, we are not secure!

I would agree that it's messed up.  I don't see how illegals are being offered better education or benefits than legals though?  They also can't ignore the legal system.  If they commit a crime and are caught, one of two things will happen to them if they are identified as an illegal immigrant.  They will either be handed over to INS for deportation, or they will be tried for thier crime, serve time, then deported - in Oregon anyhow.

I'm all in favor of fixing what's broken though, and making it possible for an able-bodied Mexican who's interested in working to be a citizen is part of that.

Legal immigrants are also dirt poor and will work for lower wages same with high school students..

difference is?  They aren't criminals. They don't steal their way into our country.

INS needs massive reforms. Btw this isn't just a few people here and there..there are something like 9 MILLION illegal immigrants in the USA.

That's 9 million **** jobs that the LEGAL immigrants are out of luck on. So they can now suck off the state welfare, coming once again out of our pockets cause no one will hire them.

btw I'll bet that 50-80% of that money is going right back accross the border to support the family and isn't being put back into our system. It's a leeching process.

The problem isn't that INS needs a reform but that quite a few of the illegals know how to tie up the system. Another factor is that those who do not want to play the legal fight game and just get deported, just turn around and reenter the country.

I just spent 15 months going to a community college (getting my A&P) withing 5 miles of the fence. Daily I say multiple Border Patrol vehicles patroling the highway and often they had a group of 25 or more on the side of the road. I have seen groups of them running across the highway in traffic between cars going 70 MPH.

I helped deport more than a few illegals that I found when I was a Police Officer. Any illegal I found I turned over to Border Patrol so they could get sent back.

The county and state govt. here are bleeding fiscally for the treatment the illegals get in local hospitals. The illegals of course do not pay and just skip out if the hospital doesn't call BP. There is an estimate well into the millions per year for this medical coverage.

I don't really blame them for wanting to be here. I DO blame Mexico for not taking care of their own people and helping them at home.

On the other hand quite a few of the illegals are not Mexican. A local news report said that a car load of iraqi's were stopped trying to cross the border from Mexico last month.

one major thing we need to do is to change the law that allows any child born in the United States to automatically obtain US citizenship, *whether or not* his mother was here legally.  Once born as citizens, these "anchor babies" automatically qualify their families for all sorts of benefits, benefits not available in their home country.  So we in effect are rewarding people for sneaking in and stealing citizenship for their children, when the people who follow the rules might wait ten or twenty years, or *forever* for legal admission.  Grrrr!!
