Any plane. Take into consideration that a single hit from hispano gun may cause serious or catastrophic damage. the same applies to Typh, Tempest, P38, F4U1C, N1K2, 262 and 110G2.
The rule is to never give them a single shooting oportunity.

The Spit IX, in my experience, is so completely uber that you shouldn't even try to fight it.  You should simply turn on your emergency flashers, fly directly in front of it, flat and level, at about 175 mph, and calmly await the inevitable.  :)

lol... Fighting ONE spit9 is no problem at all. It's the cherry pickers that buzz me while I'm beating the spit up that bother me.

If you are in a FW190A8 and are fighting a Spit IX, then you have 3 good options:

(a) Go for the head-on shot and start firing at d1.0 and just keep shooting and spraying.  The FW190a8 with four 20mm will out-gun the Spit IX.

(b) If you are high and fast, chop throttle and come in behind and below the Spit IX.  The Spitfire has a large blind spot directly behind and below it.

(c) If the Spitfire is circling around, then try to make a snap shot as soon as it is in front of you.

Do not try to turn a FW190 against a Spitfire or you will lose.

As for the Mustang, it will out-turn a Spit but only at high speed (300 or more) and with 1 notch of flaps.  After that first turn, you should look to get out of the fight because the Spitfire will get the advantage as your plane gets slower.

the key is to always be either faster or higher than your target and all the other enemy planes around. The one that will get you is the one you haven't seen, so keep your eyes open, look around, and always keep in mind a three dimensional tactical picture of the airspace around you, anticipating where the enemies will be next....

What am I talking about? I never managed to do that :(

Very interesting ... can you expound on some of your experiences that explain how the Spit is "so completely uber".

SlapShot:

I was trying to add some levity.  (Note the smiley face.)

I often fly the Spit IX, (so note that my jest was, in some sense, a jab at myself) and am constantly told that it is uber and that I am a dweeb for flying it.  The prevailing opinion seems to be that you simply need to set it on autopilot and kills will accumulate automatically.  :)

In all seriousness, I have naught to rely upon but my relatively brief experience.  Not being one to let lack of knowledge impede stating my opinion, however, I would rate the Spitfire IX as one of the elite dogfighters in the game.  Its outclimbs and outruns everything it cannot outturn and outturns everything it can't outrun.  It retains energy like few other planes.  It doesn't compress easily and maintains decent control at very high speeds.  It has very gentle and forgiving stall characteristics.  Its cannons have excellent ballistics and more than enough lethality to kill in a single snap shot.  It rolls sufficiently well to e-fight and reverse effectively.  If you employ prudent energy management and avoid the classic Spitfire Luftberry, the plane is extremely survivable, notwithstanding its modest top speed.

I think the IX gets a bad rap as a "beginner's" plane.  Although it is certainly easier to get your first kills in a Spit than in, say, an F4U, most of the Spit IX's best qualities will be completely lost on the rank novice (I know because I just recently graduated from "rank novice" to "not rank but still pretty smelly novice").  In the hands of an ace, I have to believe that the sky's the limit.  For me of very modest ability, the IX allows me to engage under unfavorable circumstances and occassionally live to tell the tale.

While perhaps not "so completely uber," I would posit that the IX is tough to beat in an even engagement between equally skilled pilots.

LoneStarBuckeye,

I apologize for misinterpreting your post. <>

I have to agree with everything in your last post, and that description sounds exactly what it was designed for.

The Spit IX, in the hands of a newbie does afford them some survivablilty, but when confronted with an experienced stick, they will/should die sooner or later. Get the Spit in the hands of an experienced stick and its a real killer, but still can be killed by many other planes.

Yes.  Lots of planes retain their energy just as good, if not better than the Spitfire.
