Attack and defend
« on: April 02, 2003, 12:39:50 PM »
I played paintball this weekend and we played a game called attack and defend.  A real eye opener for me.

Basic concept is simple.  The defending team goes into a tower and typically is outnumbered 3 to 1 (depending on the size of the group of players).  The attacking team must capture the tower.

In this case we had about 30 players on the attacking team, 10 defending.  I was on the attacking team.  Our strategy was to leave some of the group behind to lay down supressing fire on the tower to keep their heads down, the rest of the group leap frogging forward until we got to the tower.

We took 70% causualties before we even got to the tower.  I was one of them. 3 hits center of mass. :(  The rest of them got it trying to get in once they got to the tower

A big to the boys and girls doing it for real.  God help them, cuz I think the real war starts at Baghdad.  Even with all our technology, its gonna come down to the ground pounders and IMO, are going to be at a disadvantage when we go in.  I hope I'm wrong.

Similar game I took part in a few years ago in the Poconos.  A "castle" defended by about 10 people, and about 30 people (including myself) attacking.

The building was a two story, simple wodden fortress type thing with ramparts and towers, etc.

We split the 30 or so attackers into three groups.  Center group providing suppressive fire while the other two groups flanked left and right.  Once the flankers were in position to draw defenders away from the front wall, the center group attacked.

Once the center group began moving forward, the two flanking groups converged.

Surprisingly enough, even though the damn things hurt, we had alot of ex and current military guys with us and no one backed down to to stop and shoot- we all ran the whole way.

All 30 players were shot, most multiple times, and the building was not taken.  The defenders lost one as the result of a lucky shot during the first few seconds.

I took 4 hits - 2 to the torso and 2 to the head - one in the goggles and one splashed right through the breathing grate and let me tell you how ****ty paintballs taste.

Had we been doing this for real, we would have counted 30 KIA's in a little over 2 minutes and I wouldnt have a face.  Hopefully the guys in Iraq know a little more about building assault than a bunch of college kids.

a variety in arsenal and different types of support would have benefitted this excersize greatly imo.

launch paint grenades into the building for example.

no reason to go in there and give it to them personally if you have alternative means.

sounds like a fun game, but don't think it fully represents our capabilities for securing a building filled with nothing but enemy.

In the real world, wouldn't we have smoke as cover and armored vehicles to help?

Hell if we didn't need the building intact we could just blow it the hell away with some tank fire.

You guys getting wasted assaulting a prepared position is not surprise though, hell look at WW1, and charging the machine guns, didn't like 50k die in a day on the Somme?

This is the kind of stuff tanks and air cover where made for! :)

I love paintball.

It would have gone much better if your teammates were people you play with regularly, like a team.

that way you know their style and their guns. put the best marskmen with the best guns giving covering and supressing fire, and the fastest players with the smaller agile guns to charge the castle from two directions, making random unpredictable movement patterns.

Ahh... I which we had those kind of events here :(

From what I hear they will be having paintball at this years Con.

I've never played it, only army laser tag, so it should be alot of fun to see what it's like.

Granted, there are differences between paintball and TRW (ie. tanks, explosives etc).

I saw on the news before the war started, our troops training for urban combat using paintballs and an attack/defend senerio.  I believe after the exercise, the attacking force had sustained 40% or 50% casualties.

The point being, when we hit Baghdad, if the defenders decide to fite, its gonna be really ugly :(

Its fun.  I 've only done it once.

Thought I was gonna have a heart attack due to the combo of a closterphobic mask, running from tree to tree and being shot at.

It stings, but it doesn't at the same time.  You're so amped up.  When the ball doesn't break it hurts more, but you get to keep going.

I shot a 10yr old square in the chest from 20 yds after he raised his hand.  I felt bad, but damn he was such a good target.

Back in high school I used to rutinely shoot people who surrender. Its the paintball equivalent of chute shooting.

Does that make me a war criminal? :(

sounds like someone dosn't understand what "suppressive fire " means, basically it means the enemy is too bizzy ducking to return fire.

Who are you talking about?

I dont know if you have played paintball, but you dont actually die from getting hit, people tend to be more bold in the face of supressing fire, so it doesnt work as well.

You need players with good aim and good guns to hit any defenders who dont care about inacurate supressing fire.

don't feel bad, it's the only time you actually get to shoot them. :D

I've heard it can be pretty painful when it's cold out and I've heard it can bruise but it still sounds like too much fun to pass up.
