Scouting and unknow areas...
« on: April 05, 2003, 02:43:51 AM »
First, once again, I'm sorry for my poor english (I'm french). I hope you will understand my idea ;)

Add an option, in the arena settings : "fog war" (its fog war or war fog ? :p).

The map would becomes dark for the two countries, besides some areas, like, for example, the periphery of the airports (radar range), or straightforwardly all the part belonging to a team...

Progressively, the players will explore the map and this map will be discovered, simulating their range of view.

With this system, we can imagine other characteristics of each planes, like the view range to retranscribe on the map to become clear. The range of sight could also vary according to altitude...

Playing would be then more fascinating in the main Arena, on large maps, and no-armed planes like Ar-234 would have other pleasant capacities !

I think reconnaissance flights could be interesting...
With you to judge ;)

I'm all for scouting teams of a fighter and a fast bomber having an actual mission to run. During the last couple of years in the Pacific that is how the USN ran scouting missions. They would up a carrier borne fighter and a dive bomber for scouting.

I hope something like that comes into play with AH2 where you have to use a reconnaisance mission of 2-4 aircraft to get it done.

Not sure about the countries being "Dark" until discovered, sounds a bit to much like "Age of Empires" to me. It might add a nice twist for a non historical special event but you could only use the map once.
An enemy country where you only knew the topographical (sp)? layout and the location of key cities & factories etc, but did not initially know which was which and no firm info on field placement until you have found them yourself would be an idea. (I think Finland was a bit like this in WW2 with all the "backwater" fields dotted around).
Once discovered they could then be "added" to the map.

[JAB]
Leave it to the French to ask for more 'scouting' rather than just going to war when you know the enemy is out there

Midnight, come on.  In the real WWII, scouting was actually a big part, especially earlier in the war when there was less radar.  I dont think I like the "dark map" idea  (sounds more like civilizationIII than a flight sim)  but I do think there should be something to make scouting more important.

Scouting was a big part of the war, no doubt about it.

Thing is, not many players are going to want to fly missions where you basically do nothing but look at scenery.

Scouting was not done for the sole reason of mapping a terrain, I may be crazy but I'm sure we had maps 60 yrs ago and I'm certain they're not a recent invention.

Scouting AFAIK was mainly done to discover the enemies positions and gauge their capabilities.

Defeater does have an idea here but instead of making the map black to simulate fog of war it could be coded so that strat targets and bases are not visible on the clipboard map until they've been overflown.

The problem with that is it's too much coding that will be easily circumvented by creating our own Intel maps (screenshot) of a fully populated map. The only way to overcome this is to make base types/locations and strat locations dynamic upon a map a new map load to the arena. With the way it works now thats not possible.

A:  Its already hard enough to take bases

B:  The folks at HTC were lazy and didnt take the time to make a pilot model.  When you bailout, you are seeing the paratrooper model, that is why he has what looks like an m1 carbine.  However, like in the original warbirds, maybe you can have a little colt45 to carry around...

I'm not so much into the "fog of war" aspect as plain old scouting. I would like to see scouting missions, with enough "experience points" awarded for spotting something that people would actually do it.
