Is there something new with smoking planes?
« on: November 19, 2001, 09:26:00 AM »
Yesterday I was helping to attack 32 (I think) and a PB-17 "ackstar" lifts to defend.  I made my first pass and raked across his wings.  Smoke spewed out of 3 engines as I set up for my second pass.  Just before I made it though, the plane stopped smoking.  It appeared that he was still missing some control surfaces, but the smoke stopped.  I made another pass and then went about my business.  (got the kill a couple minutes later)

Also this morning, I was dancing with a spit when somebody else took his wing off.  He smoked for about 30 yards and then it stopped.  He was still making efforts at keeping the plane in level flight and shooting his clip out but no more smoke.

Is there some kind of FCS I don't know about in this game?

Preon,

I sort of noticed something similar the other day when I peppered an enemy and had him smoking good and all of a sudden it looks like he fixes himself in the air and flies on.  The conclusion I quickly came up with is that if the player bails out, the plane stops smoking and looks like it flies on until he opens his chute and a new icon/object appears.  The longer he falls w/out opening the chute, the longer the plane looks healthy.  I'm just guessing on this.

Well, 3 of us witnessed an N1K with 262 speed chase down a co-alt P51D (Rangerbob) then do some nice aerobatics that was similiar to star wars on the 2nd wingy.  We got the kill, and the hacker of us, but his name did not show, "Kill of _____ awarded to Bigjim"...this hack managed to not only pork the aircraft but managed to fool the server with no name.  :(  Sort of related ??

I popped a P51D really good yesterday. He was trailing smoke & fuel. I dropped to his low 8 oc to view my handy work and watch to see what he would do. Suddenly I hear his engine die (man I love these sounds now) and the smoke stops as well as the fuel leak. First time I ever noticed that.

I *think* I've seen that a couple times myself.  Where I'm certain to have just downed an aircraft with much pings and pieces falling off before he explodes and I don't get the kill or an assist.  Now that someone else has mentioned this, I do not think I'm seeing things.  In fact, I recorded the first one of these I encountered about a week back but the film recorder or viewer is porked and I can't seem to view films anymore.

Figure this one out.  While flying the G-6 attacking a b17 is how shoudl I say frustrating.  MY squad m8 Wotan and I load it with just the 30mm and everytime we engage a 17 in the G-6 and unload at point blank range scoring succesive hits with 30mm no visible damage is done.  Well I thought it was lag after this had happened a few times.  Then last night upped for a 17K B-17 in my G6.  UNloaded on him at D300 first 30mm and scored 15 hits, then all guns firing more hits well ping ping engine seizes.  As I drift to the earth in a gentle glide I sat on the runway waiting for the confirmed kill message.  Nope didn't get one, asked other players flying to get him as well and someone else had killed him after I was gliding away 4 minutes later.  This is very frustrating as it is only the B-17 that has this some what invulnerablity to 109 G-6.  Anyone else experience this before?

I've noticed that damaged planes suddenly become whole and undamaged (yet still out of control, apparently)only to suddenly turn into chutes. I guess the process takes about 3-5 seconds.

Some kind of shape changing between the "plane" shape and the "chute" shape?

It's lag. It takes time for their end to tell your end that they have bailed. When they bail out, the plane is still going in the last direction it went but it was sent some information that the plane is no longer alive. It changes to, typically, an open chute because lately the bandwidth or number of aircraft around you prevents the data to be sent in a steady stream and thus you don't see the aircraft disappear and the chute appear then open. You just see the aircraft become whole again, travel a few feet then change to an open chute.

With the patch 1.8  it happened several times that I didnt get some kills or assists. But I noticed that this happens always in dense furballs. I saw the hits on the con, saw him going down, but no kill or assist message.
On the other hand I got kills on planes that I clearly missed.
Maybe there are some increasing uncertainties  about a planes position in an overcrowded MA?

tofri that would make sense.I logged on when there was 288 people online and went to the CV tower.suddenly a player upped in an F4u and he was 40 feet off the carrier! floating over the sea!, i sat watching as over the next 5 to 10 minutes the players upping on the carrier got closer and closer to the ships deck.evntually they were in their correct position but it did make me think this might be the cause of the infamous rubber bullet stuff thats been happening a fair bit lately to many people.

You smoke a target at 20,000 feet altitude and he bails yet he freefalls to about 1,000 feet altitude before pulling the ripcord...what does it look like?  I'd assume the plane stops smoking and "flies" for a while like he regenerated; however, it dissapears once that chute opens.  What happens if the B17 pilot bails yet the gunner does not?

The time I was sure I killed an enemy and got no kill or assist message was away from a furball and basically just me and him.  I took a few films that day but I think I guessed which one this would've been and named it specifically to save for the future and deleted all except this one in the hopes that one day I can view it and see what happened.  I hope I guessed right and I hope this film viewer/recorder bug is fixed soon and I can one day review it.
