Exploding at launch
« on: April 07, 2003, 08:50:26 AM »
Anybody else have the situation where you attempt to launch a 262 and you appear on the runway and suddenly you just explode? with the kill message "you have been Killed" no enemy action in the area just a total waste of 200 perkies :(  If Iam going to spend the perks I would a least like to have the chance to fly the silly thing, same thing happened and few weeks ago to a squad mate, is this a known bug or just a glitch that happend to me? not  that the perks are that big a thing but it is fustrating to say the least. Unfortunatly I dont film everything like my squadie ALF, anybody sent a film of this situation  to HTC? comments thoughts?

The only time I've died on launch was when I tried to launch an M8 and the spawn point was on the side of a mountain.  Turns out the vehicle was falling off the side before the game could load it.

How long were you logged in before spawning?

This has happened to me a couple of times with different AC when I get booted out of the arena, and come back in.

All planes that are not identified by your FE yet show up as enemy until the data from the server gets to your computer.  So when you spawn, you may "collide" with an enemy aircraft launching from your base.

Rather annoying.

Ouch is on the right track.  The "default" aircraft - that which is displayed for *all* units for which your front end has no data - is a Bishop P-51D.  When you first log in, you can watch from the tower as the planes all morph from bishstangs to other friendly aircraft, as you eventually load the correct data.  You may have spawned on top of one of these false enemies, especially if you had just logged in.

I think Ouch had the right idea also. I have also had this problem before. What I attribute it to was "colliding" with the default enemy plane the game puts up because it has not got the information on the friendly plane from the server yet.
The way I fixed the problem was NEVER launching until the Roster has listed EVERY pilot playing. In other words, I would make note of the # of players in the arena when I come in, then go to the roster and continue hitting "Refresh" until the numbers of each country stop updating. If the numbers for the three countries add up to the number of players in the game, then all information on server should be updated on your computer. There should be no more default ponies flying around and it should be safe to launch. Since I have adopted this update process, I have not had any problems blowing up on runway since. Although it was VERY frustrating trying to figure out why.

Well if that's true, then would the problem go away by joining the Bishops?

Remember that it's only aircraft weapons that are limited to ranges of about 700 yards or so (if you're lucky). A couple of months ago I was driving a Panzer IV that got tracked outside an enemy airfield, and I picked up more than a dozen kills vulching the field from 2200 yards out with HE rounds -- someone would pop up on the runway, I'd fire a round aimed to hit a little way down the runway, and they'd roll right into the explosion. The crowning point of that run came when somebody, assuming that a field that was then one 'rank' behind the front-line fields would be safe, popped up in a 262... and died before they'd rolled 10 feet.

If you got vulched on the runway by a GV, you're not going to see where the shot came from unless you happen to be looking in the right direction and see the smoke trail. All you'll see is your plane exploding around you.

I was on when the Elkster had his incident of spontaneous aircraft rapid disassociation event (he blew up).  He had been on for quite some time, is it possible some other player had just logged in and was himself listed as an unknown p51 for an instant?

He might not see the shot that killed him but he would have seen the kill credit system message showing him who had fired the fatal round.  Like he mentioned, he only got "You've been killed" message with no one getting the kill credit.  This just lends more credence and he spawned after he had just logged on and 'collided' with an aircraft as it spawned before his FE could be properly updated.

I doubt it.  If that were the case, then seeing bish ponies taking off from fields and morphing into other planes would almost be commonplace (every time somebody logs on and launches nearby).  To my knowledge, I have never seen this aside from the first minute or two that I was logged on.
