Dinner with a WWII Fighter Pilot tommorrow
« on: April 09, 2003, 08:38:34 AM »
Hi all,

Off to a get-together at RETNUHs place tommorrow and there will be a WWII fighter pilot (Commonwealth) with us.

So I thought that if anyone had any questions, I'd be happy to ask them for you.

Im not sure what he flew in fighters, but I believe it included P40Ns etc.

How much emphasis on formation flying in training vs formation flying in combat?  I recall that a Luftwaffe veteran pilot had lamented that, late in the war, the new pilots were drilled on tight formation flying which impeded their ability to keep their eyes open for enemy aircraft because they were so busy watching their flight leader's plane.  I was curious if the same thing happened in other air forces.

Also, his opinion about pilot age vs combat effectiveness.  In WW2 the pilots were younger than the pilots in Korea, and the pilots in Korea were younger than the pilots in 'Nam.  Nowadays, the planes go faster and pull more G's, yet the pilots tend to be in their 30's and 40's rather than in their 20's like in WW2.

That's very cool bendo! It's not often that you get to talk to someone like that.
I've been fortunate in that I work at the Museum of Flight in Seattle and have met many aviation personalities, the most interesting being the American Fighter Aces who held their reunion here last year. Since I work at the museum, I naturally volunteered to run security for their mixer. I got many autographs on my flight jacket and got to rub elbows with many aces over the weekend.
My work is sending me to the Aces reunion this year and it should be another good time.

:)

he needs a $100 joystick to get his WWII fighting skills back and ask that veteran if the flight models in AH are realistic.
