Huge Mobile Floating Base

This thing is HUGE!

http://www.bwxt.com/Products/mob-bwx.html

"JMOB at a Glance
The Joint Mobile Offshore Base (JMOB) will enhance the ability of the United States to provide logistical support for the projection of power and aid worldwide. At the same time, it will lend greater security to the men and women on it.

And compared with traditional land bases, this moveable, reusable investment is not subject to the politics of other nations  , enabling military equipment to be prepositioned in the theater of interest within 30 days nearly anywhere in the world."

Self-powered, semisubmersible supply and theater vessel.

Five individual single-base units, each 1,000 feet long, connected together to form a one-mile floating runway 500 feet wide and 20 feet above the ocean surface.

Deployed as five single-base units at 15 knots; 30 days from U.S.
to operation anywhere in the world.

Survivable in all sea states (50-foot seas with 100-knot winds).

Total of 5 million square feet, with 3.5 million square feet (80 acres) of climate-controlled storage space to preposition 300,000 tons of equipment and supplies with 75 million gallons of fuel and

50 million gallons of potable water.

All materiel directly available for on-board operation prior to theater use.

JMOB has an amphibious-launch-compatible "artificial" beach.
Below-deck roadways between units.

I'd have to think that it would be less expensive than what we have to give those nations that let us use their land.

Okay..is it survivable in ALL sea states...or 50 foot seas and 100 knot winds?

One thing that should NEVER be done is to underestimate the power of the ocean, and it sounds like that is what has been done here already.
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

That America's cup hasn't seen US soil in so long I've forgotten what it looks like.

Sea States go from 1 up to level 12, which is 64 + knots. Maybe if a large huricane was headed it's way it could detatch into 5 seperate units again and be more survivable.......I dunno.

I like the idea a lot though. No more paying/praying for access to foreign bases as Martlet said.

Stromberg had something like that in "The Spy Who Loved Me" and look what happened to it - a single British agent sent it to the bottom of the ocean!

I've had a better idea for quite a while:
A huge flying-boat aircraft carrier, nuclear powered.

Maybe a base within an extinct volcano would suffice? You could chisel it into a sculpture of chimpy and no one would ever be the wiser!

Anyway, a floating base would not survive impact with one of those newly discovered, quantum physical, schroedinger's eqution following mammoth waves I watching a program about th other day. They were massive.

As of yet, no-one has tamed the gravitational attraction between water and the moon.

BTW, this base reminds me of that idea to build a floating hotel with a runway on the roof. I wonder what ever happened to that?

no offense, but if these giant waves have only just now been dicovered, I doubt the base would have much to worry about them.
