Hey, its better than the modem transfer rate of 26.6 I'm getting....anyway, heres a question:

I have two boxes, both with Win XP Pro. I have one cable routed into the room. They come out friday to hook up one computer. How do I get the other box hooked up and what hardware do I need? network card? What type?

Call up the cable guys and make sure the cable modem they're bringing you hooks up to your computer by a NIC, not USB. Then buy something like this:

Then ya just need a NIC in both of your computers.

Dlink=POO, Netgear is the only way to go, plug it in and it automatically configures IP and DNS. And you can find very good deals. You could go wireless if you want, ex. you have a laptop and wanna go outside on the deck and work from there. Or you could just go the standard route.

cable cos charge by the IP so a router is the way to go versus a straight hub

you'll need a nic in each computer you want to tie in and CAT5 cable run from the router to each computer you want tied to the cable modem.

I have two cable modems and 6 IPs but then I've worked for the outfit for almost 20 years

Ripsnort, each computer needs a NIC (network interface card - network card). You may also need a router, it depends on how many IP addresses you get with your cable service. (If you only get 1, you need a router. If you get 2 or more, you are ok, though a router can still be useful for adding more computers later. In some circumstances you can also reduce you monthly bill by dropping to one IP.)

I'd recommend Linksys products myself. Us Robotics makes a cheap router that seems to work ok as well.

Thks guys! The cable hooks up via ethernet or USB, I will not be doing the latter.

I just walked upstairs and talked to our hardware guy, he recommended 3Com ethernet card ($33) and Linksys router ($49) since it has a built in fire wall, I imagine I'll need to by pass this firewall within Linksys when flying online?

Pfunk = Tard. Dlink is fine, so is Netgear, and so is Linksys for that matter. Find the one that has the best price tag, and chances are it'll do more than you ever need.

Generally you wont have to mess with the firewall as they are built into the router and not software operated. What will happen is the router will spoof IP address for each computer. Generally they are 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3.

192.168.0.1 is used for configuring and loggin into the router which is quite nice

With the Netgear you can block sites of your choosing, block ports of your choosing, foward ports etc. It also has logs for every website visited (In case you wanna snoop on the wife and kids

I have a network setup for use when Tomato is visiting. She sets up her computer next to mine, and plugs into my network card. I have a Dlink 200 USB modem. Don't let anyone tell you that the host PC needs TWO network cards. You need 2xNIC, but the DSL200 acts as one of these, so only one physical network card in the host PC, and the existing one in the guest PC. We can even share folders and the printer.

Go to My Network Places and run the Wizard. Host IP will be 192.168.0.1, guest IP 192.168.0.2 .

Don't really need a router.... I have 5 computers running on cable through a switch.... cable modem runs into crossover port on switch..............

Don't know your location but where i'am cable charges for each computer accessing the net.

Meaning 2 computers = 2 times the monthly fee etc.

DSL doesn't care, there is only 1 charge no matter how many computers.

So you might wanna be sure and hide/not let the installer know your gona use a router!

Rip - if you want to use a HUB verse the whole router thing its usually relativly cheap for the second IP. Her i think its only $6 a month! + hubs a lot easier to hook up!

Rip,

Stay away from the MS ICS crap, but go with router / gateway
Netgear, Dlink are some of the better ones and you will have to set up NAT tables etc.... but if you need any Details etc....let me know

Hubs are out of date...... do switches.... better and cheaper...
