Gameport to USB adapter ? XP
« on: April 15, 2003, 08:49:57 AM »
Can anyone tell me the process for using a simple gameport to USB adapter in Windows XP when XP does not auto recognize? In other words, how to manualy install. What I am trying to do is connect CH Pedals (gameport) through USB using the adapter.
I have the pedals connected through gameport at the present time, but, can`t get smoothness calibrated, so I want to try USB.

My USB adapter came with a switch for multiple settings.  Make sure you have the switch in the right place.  I plugged my CH stuff into the adaptor, then into the USB plug in the back and my WindowsME automatically detected it and installed drivers for it.  I assume its the same way with XP.

I just have a simple gameport to USB adapter, no switchs. Where did you get that one?

From the CH knowledge base . . . . .
A gameport to USB adapter may work, but is not guaranteed. You will most likley come across a few incompatabilities, and maybe a need to calibrate more often than not. Also, the long term effects of the adapter are unknown, and could void your warranty. Your best bet would be to start off with a USB device instead of adding an adapter.

If you do encounter problems, you will need to contact the adapter's manufacturer for more information as this setup is unsupported by CH Products.

Some have switches to support mutiple modes for different types of devices ilke the Rockfire does....other adapters will only support a generic 4 axis - 4 button config.

I used the Radio Shack USB adaptor with my gameport CH Combatstick and CH regular pedals and they worked fine EXCEPT the hat switch worked fine as POV in Windows but AH saw only button combinations.  I couldn't figure out how to get AH to recognize multiple buttons, only multiple keys.

One thing I learned from the exercise was that my 8-year-old pots were bad.  I could've ordered new ones from CH Products and simply replaced the worn out ones (I've done it before - easy enough to do), but I decided to go ahead and get the USB Fighterstick and Pro Pedals instead.

I''m wondering, if you used the CH Products Control Manager with the USB adaptor on a gameport Combatstick, if you could create a USB Combatstick without spending the $100 for a new one.  Hmmm.

You can download the CM version 2 for free from CHProducts.com without installing any CH stick (in fact, the instructions say to add the sticks AFTER you've installed CM).  Its free to d/l and you have nothing to lose but time. :)
