It has nothing to do with being able to afford to lose or not. Most of us can lose perk planes up the wazoo. It has to do with the fact that as a reward, they suck.
Where's the fun in being gangbanged in an aircraft that has a
slight performance edge? If you want to be gangbanged you can get it for free by flying where there are lots of enemies and few friendlies.
The Perk idea as I understood it:
Objective:Be able to add "super" units without imbalancing the game and at the same time encourage people to use the less frequently used units.
Result as implimented:"Super" units can be added without imbalancing the game because the "super" units are practically not used. Because the "super" units are generally not fun to use there is no motivation to actually earn or spend perk points and thus there is no motivation to use the higher ENY units in preference to the more powerful low ENY units.
As implimented I think the Aces High perk system has been a 50% success.
My suggestion:Icons should be as follows:
Ar234 = 234
F4U-1C = F4U
F4U-4 = F4U
Me163 = 163
Me262 = 262
Spitfire Mk XIV = SPIT
Ta152H-1 = 190
Tempest Mk V = TYPH
Tiger I = TANK (all tanks, Panzer IV H and Tiger I currently, should be labled TANK. Identifiying tank types from the air was, I believe, quite difficult.)
I believe this would relieve the "gangbang the perk unit" mentality and make the perk units actually fun to use, and thus a viable and desired reward. Be a desired reward would give perk points a purpose and make earning them worthwhile, thus encouraging the use of the rarer high ENY units. The current perk prices would keep the perk units from flooding or imbalancing the MA, at least after people burned off their current stockpiles of perk points. Actually, zeroing everybody's perk points at the same time as making this change might be a not half bad idea.
