at public sporting events ... at least at this park:

Fan Attacks Umpire at Baseball Game

The Associated Press
Tuesday, April 15, 2003; 11:30 PM

CHICAGO - A fan came out of the stands during Tuesday night's game between the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox and attacked first base umpire Laz Diaz. Security and players came to Diaz's aid and the fan was quickly taken away.

Immediately after Carlos Lee flied out to right to end the eighth inning, the fan ran on the field and tried to tackle Diaz, wrapping his arms around the umpire's legs.

It was the first appearance by the Royals in Chicago since coach Tom Gamboa was pummeled by a father and son who came out of the stands last September.

Three times earlier Tuesday night, the game was delayed when fans ran onto the field before being tackled by security guards.

U.S. Cellular Field, formerly Comiskey Park, will host the All-Star game July 15.

Before the game, Gamboa tried to downplay his return to the field where he was attacked seven months ago.

"I haven't given it a thought really," Gamboa said. "Lightning doesn't strike twice."

Gamboa, who was the Royals' first base coach when he was attacked last Sept. 19, is now Kansas City's bullpen coach. Gamboa, 55, still has a minor hearing loss in his right ear following the beating.

The boy, 15 at the time, was sentenced to five years of probation and also ordered to undergo mandatory counseling and perform 30 hours of community service.

The boy was arrested along with his father, William Ligue Jr., who initially pleaded innocent to charges of aggravated battery and mob action. The case is still pending.

Gamboa, a former coach with the Cubs, said Chicago sports fans shouldn't be judged by what happened to him.

"It's a great sports city and no one incident or what two guys did would tarnish that," Gamboa said.

"It's over and done with as far as I'm concerned."

They should start serving blunts, joints, or some good brownies. There would be no more fights and snack revenues would soar.

While alcohol is a problem, the larger problem is culture.

Just see how differently the alcohol culture is in Sweden and Denmark.

Alcohol doesn't hit people - people hit people!

'Tis true :).

why stop drinking when you can just enforce the laws we already have...

Way I see it thats battery and that handsomehunk should be tried as such...  No "I was under the influence defense"

He should go serve at least 3 days for that attack... Not to mention civil action against his estate as far as im concerned..

Kimmel had it right last night talking about this incident.  He said this guy will sue the players for ruffing him up a bit...  get a settlement and in ten years from now crash into someones house at 100mph...

on a side note...

Don King is a murderer yet he's not behind bars...  Note his Slogan "Only in America.."

The irony of the american justice system is appalling...  Victimless crimes fill our jails full (at 30k per inmate) and freaking rapist murderers and other miscreants run rabid on streets...  or in this case our baseball parks...

Food for thought...

Same ball field, same coaching position... I almost wonder if there isn't a design problem in that section of the stands.  Maybe there's a gate there that needs to be locked?  Is it too easy to climb over a railing there?

Whoever wakes them up now.

In all seriousness, when I was a kid, the bleachers were a zoo, but no one ever rushed the field and attacked anyone(they attacked each other in the bleachers)

It's a shame that a few nitwits are going to ruin things for everyone else. Getting close to the field is one of the best parts of going to a game. We would go early and go down to field level and try to get autographs. Then later in the game as people in the front row left, we would work our way down to the better seats. What you are going to see is they are going to keep people away from the front rows, other than those who have a ticket to be there. And the reason why they haven't done it yet is that it is bad for business, they want a fan friendly environment. I hope it doesn't come to that.

You're right. We should all take the advice of the Brits in sporting situations, particularly in situations regarding Belgium and soccer.

They are SUCH a wonderful example to follow.  :p

Lovely high moral ground there Dowding.

Gamboa requested to the judge and prosecutor that the kid not be locked up.  He feels that the idiot father was the one primarily responsible.
