Configuration requests/suggestions
« on: April 16, 2003, 10:18:04 AM »
Figured I'd start this one since I haven't seen one yet.

I also have a request.....It may seem trivial and not really effect a lot of folks but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I would like to see an added option applicable to "toggleable commands", an option to seperate the actions into 2 inputs. Either that or break down all currently  toggleable commands into their individual functions and allow a single keystroke to be mapped to multiple commands to retain the "toggle" as it is now.

For instance landing gear, the default keyboard input to toggle landing gear is "g". We all know gear has 2 states, up or down, pressing "g" attempts to put the gear into the other state. Enabling this new option would allow us to set "g" to 'lower the gear' and "Shift G" to 'raise the gear'.

Now before y'all go crazy and say it's a waste of time hear me out. I'm bringing this up due to my recent venture into building a cockpit. Say I have a gear lever currently i'd have to set both states of the lever to send "g" so that I may toggle the gear up or down. I hop into a ride, take-off, flip the lever up to raise the gear and look for a fight. Now during this fight someone kindly hands me my tail section and I'm forced to grab a new ride, take-off and then raise the gear by moving the lever down cuz I didn't reset it prior to take-off. Now during flight my cockpit does not represent the true state of the aircraft which detracts from gameplay a smidge.
Ok, so you say "Reset the frickin gear lever before you grab a new ride", perfectly understandable, but keep in mind the gear lever is only a single example, take a moment and think of how many functions/commands are "toggled". Some toggles would get effected in mid-flight without having to die, WEP for instance. Say I flip a toggle into the ON position for WEP (sends keystroke "p")...WEP is on for a bit then WEP runs out, no more WEP but toggle is still in the on position. After the engine cools a bit I want to hit WEP again but I have to flip the toggle to the OFF position (sends keystroke "p"), WEP is on but again cockpit representation is incorrect. It would be more realistic in this instance to have to flip the toggle to the OFF position then back to ON to reactivate WEP.

I know, as I stated above this may seem trivial, but if you had to keep in mind while you were flying that the physical representations in front of you may be incorrect then you might understand.

Punt.....

I know my earlier post would most likely only effect a handfull of players so I understand that the work involved may not justify satisfying only a few people, then again if you don't ask you don't get. :)

An alternative would be sticky buttons like the gear brakes are now. Function is active while the button is held down, not toggeled.

While the gear switch is set to active, gear is down.

This requires the use of directX-joystick buttons though, I don't think AH can read too many keyboard buttons pressed at the same time.

Yeah, but I'd rather use a gear "lever" such as what they had back then. A backlit sticky button is one way to go if your building a cockpit for a space sim ;)

"and then you put on your wizard hat....."

dude you are toooooooooo into the "realism" factor. if you are really building a "cockpit" to fly a game in (@ least 1 with working levers not just a seat with a keyboard tray and stuff) LOL :D

do you know what season it is outside?

when is the last time you saw this thing we call the "sky" ?

there are these other big things with little green things on them. the little green things are called "leaves". they are part of a "tree", thats the big thing. there's even little soft things that move into and out of "trees", they are called "birds".

:D :p
I don't know what to put here yet.

I agree with Acid.  I think this would be a great addition.  I've often longed for true control states when setting up profiles on my CH rig.
