But I am familiar with this beast. The pods on the wingtips were fore-and-aft jet nozzles that functioned like rudders. Note in the side view that the verticle stabs don't have rudders.

Northrop XP-79

Idea was to ram enemy bombers and in effect slice the bomber in two.

IIRC, pilot was supposed be in a prone position. Can't remember what it was made of right off hand, but the metal was supposed to be tough enough to withstand the intended collisions...........
