Help with landing.

When I am ready to land it seems I can never slow down enough, I keep bouncing off the runway. I slow the engine down is far as I can but it still seems too fast. Does anyone have any suggestions on the proper procedure for landing?

Slip  (opposite rudder and ailierons) to slow plane..... or S turns.... flaps of course......

Try and set up a little earlier too and give yourself time to bleed off speed without having to use aggressive maneuvers (hard turns and such).  I see a lot of new players who try some sort of "combat landing" where they come in hot and high, diving to the runway and trying to land.  Instead, set up earlier, lower your gear and flaps, then settle the plane onto the runway.  If you are travelled more than 120mph or so when you cross the runway threshold, then you are going much too fast.

The question begs to be asked ... are you applying brakes (space bar) after touchdown ?

Typically, you can't get the gear down on most planes until you are under 200 mph. With that in mind, coming to a controlled stop, a speeds under 200 mph,  by applying applying brakes, should stop you far before you roll/bounce off the runway.

The trickest of planes to stop, IMHO, is the F4U line of planes. These planes require a longer roll down the runway, prior to applying brakes. You must make sure that the tail wheel is on the ground before applying brakes. Once under 100 mph, the tail wheel is firmly on the ground, and at that point, you can stomp on the brakes without causing the plane to veer out of control to either the right or left.

Hi Guys...

Glad to be back in AH action now that the "job" has lightened up recently...

Some tips on landing.  

1) I assume you know how to fly the aircraft and can perform level turns.

2) You know the commands for the keys to brake the aircraft.


For a new person I recommend getting aligned with the runway as far out as possible.  Concentrate on your alignment first.  

Once you have  that then work your vertical profile.  If you are coming in fast chop your throttle to zero.  You will see your airspeed gradually drop off.  If you are on a long final approach you should see your speed drop into a "useable range".

At 200kts, you can drop your gear.  Once you do that your speed will continue to drop at a higher rate (more drag in the air).

I then drop flaps...keep dropping them in increments until they are 100% deployed (my technique and certainly not necessary).

Once I am around 120-130 kts I apply power as needed to maintain my aimpoint on the runway.  As I get above the numbers and I am pretty low 10'...I cut the throttle and "milk" her onto the runway.

On touchdown I have brakes engaged and stop the plane!

If you are coming in fast and low try doing a level turn 90 degrees to final by pulling hard on the stick.  Put opposite rudder while doing this.  Then reverse the turn 90 degrees back to final again with the opposite rudder.  By crabbing the plane like this you are flying uncoordinatedly  <---a cool word I made up.....and will bleed airspeed off rapidly.

Once you get in the less than 200kts range do the same things as above.

Bottom line keep practicing and it will come!!!!  Oh and dont forget to keep flying the plane as you land.  Remember your flight control surfaces still work as you are taxiing down the runway.  If you are at 100 kts and still have flaps 100% you will lift off again if you pull back for example.
