The DC mod is time warp machine and it's a perfect example of  how all future wars should be decide, that way no ones gets hurt and everyone has a big laugh, cept fer the few whiners.

BTW if you are getting your butt blown up repeatly by an AH with the callsign Fluffy, guess who.

same, although I have noticed DC has completely buggered up my aiming on BF.

bf 1942 is a fun game...very addictive despite its obviously porked FM and a infantry game play stuck between AA:O and quake...leaning a bit more towards the quake...mindless fun that  doesnt need a iq above 90 to enjoy

havent played il2:fb but it does look pretty and  its FM is supposed to be  much better than the original IL2

Frankly, who gives a flying tosspiece about the FM. It's a game, and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

I doubt you guys play on European servers, but my name is 'Koba'.

I'm the one at the top of the leaderboard, often with three gold medals, of course. :D

Strange- the Horten 229 for BF:1942 looks more like the 2 seat Ho229 V6 or the HII with the modified extended nose... but still looks different from even those.

Forgotten Battles-
My system specs:
AMD Athlon 2000+ XP
GeForce 4 Ti4200 (300core/545mem) 41.09 drivers
EPoX 8KTA3+Pro
768MB PC133 SDRAM
SB Live!
Win98

I run the game at max details except for the "perfect" landscape (which uses pixel shaders, and no card runs those very fast right now) at 1024x768x32bit color with the stencil buffer enabled (gives clouds shadows, and trees/atmosphere clouds reflections in the water) with good framerates. I don't run 1600x1200, I kind of doubt you would be able to tho. The game runs best, and is designed for, 1024x768.

Concerning "lag" issues- those are related to the transfering of the new 1024x1024 aircraft skins. If you disable skin download (I do it anyway) the game is very playable.

The damage model and gunnery- seem fine to me. Downing aircraft in FB is more reliant on good aim and hitting critical parts rather than hosing the entire aircraft. This means that you need to find out the weakpoints of each aircraft, and it appears to stick to historical evidence: MiG's are very vulnerable and will catch fire with a quick burst to fuel tank areas. Hit the wing roots, fuselage immediately behind the pilot, or the engine- and it'll catch fire. Eventually it will blow up from the fire, or the pilot will burn to death and crash. I16s- easy to down, just hit them in the engine (shooting them from behind does very little damage to the front of the plane or the pilot because there is a single armor plate that doesn't cover just the pilot seat, but the whole mid section of the plane), 109s will lose their oil/coolant in almost any head on pass if you aim for their engines, sometimes they will fly right by you and you will see the prop stopped because the engine siezed, etc. The damage model is extremely detailed which requires getting in close to aim for specific areas of an aircraft to down it. Get to know the weak points of an airplane and you will find it's very easy to bag 6 or 7 aircraft even with a 109.

I won't comment on the FM in too much detail, it's very good and significantly improved in many areas over Il2. However, in the first patch (due out in the next couple of weeks) there will be FM revisions and tweaks. So things that may not be "right" right now, may be right after that patch. There's also going to be new aircraft included in the next patch. All patches will include a few aircraft, atleast that's how it was with Il2 and I believe thats what Oleg intends to do with FB.

The best thing are onilne coops hosted by people who make good missions, there's a certain few people I have come to recognize because they host good missions with good settings.

Like AH, BF1942 is fast action gaming. Each is a riot to play, almost addictive.

Although BF1942 is terrific in multiplayer internet user matching, AH holds the edge for a more personal experience due to the thousands less player community, and that we play, and in fact meet, in a common arena, every time we log in.

Unlike AH, BF1942 is ground based combat gaming, much like AH is air based. To compare what AH has achieved in FM for plane varients, to Bf1942, is like comparing Il-2 FB to AH cockpits, views, and engine managment. Not real fair. And why do it? I find equal strat in winning at BF1942 as AH, even more so as everything you do makes a diffrence in 30 minutes, as it takes in a day, or a week in maps in AH.

To say you need a IQ of a certain level to enjoy one or the other is laughable.

When a simulation like Il-2FB steps over the computer and bandwidth barrier/limits and can provide a arena like AH, it will be panacea for me. But I bet the guys calling "Quake" won't be as thrilled, and "AH Classic" will be as populated as ever.

Just saying.

Ok guys, I need some help. I've just installed BF1942 and the "Road to Rome" expansion pack. I've also installed the 1.31 patch.

When I click on the shortcut to start the game, I get the black game screen for a couple of seconds, then I get dumped right back to my desktop.

Soyo K7V Dragon Plus
AMD XP 2100+
512 MB Crucial PC2100 RAM
Abit Siluro GF4 Ti-4400
WinXP Pro sp1

I've got Direct-X 9a installed, and use the 43.00 detonator drivers. I even updated my SB Audigy drivers to the latest. Still no luck.

Could it be that my screen resolution (1600x1200x32) is too high for the game?

This is bugging me because all other games work just fine, and I just blew $70 on this game! :D

Help, please!

no comparisson between the two

IL2 FB is a simulator

1942 is an arcade

both are fun for very different reasons.

Wlfgng, you said that when you installed a new video card, BF1942 started working for you. What was your old video card, and what is your new one?

Crisis averted. Just solved my problem on my own. There is a file buried in the install tree of BF1942 called VideoDefault.con. Inside of this file, I had to change the value of

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0

to

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1

Apparently, when the value was set to 0, it wouldn't allow vertical refresh rates of over 60hz or something like that. My refresh rate is 85hz.

I wish I would've been a fly on the wall when the idiots who made that decision to disable all refresh rates were having that conversation. Yet another case of intelligent programmers doing something stupid to *help* their customers.

I test software for a living, and I can't believe this went out the door with a cap placed on vertical refresh rates!

Ah well, nonetheless I'm up & running, and have posted my fix onto a bunch of support sites, hoping this will help others that can't play this yet.

Actually banana that problem has been around for awhile. When I went  looking for tweeks to help improve my comps performance I saw alot info reguarding that.

Anyway, we should get a game going sometime.
