Helen of Troy
« on: April 21, 2003, 08:34:35 PM »
They have managed to TOTALY butcher a great classic. The sad thing is that 90+ percent watching this farce have no clue how bad its been butchered.

I was screaming at the TV... had to leave because my wife thought I was nuts.

Hollywood sucks ass.
Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

You have heard of the phrase 'The face that launched a thousand ships'? Well, she was the reason why the invasion force was sent to Troy. Hence, Helen of Troy.
War! Never been so much fun. War! Never been so much fun! Go to your brother, Kill him with your gun, Leave him lying in his uniform, Dying in the sun.

I'm no master of the classics, but I kind of enjoyed the movie.  The actress playing Helen seemed a bit mis-cast.  A blonde Greek?  What's up with that?  Then again, she was a daugter of a god so maybe that's part of the goddess package.  Some of it seemed a bit out of place and I could tell the production was limited by budget, but there was enough to keep my interest.  And parts were a bit racy, even for cable tv.

john9001: helen was greek , why do they call her "helen of troy",

She belonged to her husband. None of that emancipation stuff for ancient greeks.

Supposdly the Greeks had Blonds..ie Alexander the Great (well he was Mecodonian). The racial type we see now was largely the result of later incursions of Turks and such.

I am no expert on this though... thus...I might be very wrong.

The movie from an entertainment thing wasnt bad. Its just that they took alot of liberties w/a great classic. The combat between Hector and Achilles is complex emtionaly. You have to feel for both warriors. Achilles desired revenge for Hectors slaying of his friend. Hector went forth and faced Achilles even though he KNEW Achilles was invinceable. Achilles went to fight in Troy even though it was fortold he would die before the walls of Troy.
The entire tale is simply full of great characterization and story telling. Paris isnt the "Hero" he was portrayed in the movie...he seemed more like a fop to me in the tale itself.

Read the true errr orginal story... hell buy the translation of the Illiad(sp?) and read that.

Yea..I'm ate up.

If I was doing Helen of Troy, it wouldn't matter how good looking she was because she wouldn't be facing me.
