Recommend me an FTP program
« on: April 26, 2003, 06:03:25 AM »
I need an FTP program - something cheap and cheerful like Cute FTP. No frills, needs to work with W2000-Pro. Can anyone suggest one? I tried to purchase Cute FTP but the site is not accepting my order, for some reason.

I'd keep trying to get Cute FTP, I've found it one of the best I've ever used although Ipswitch's WS FTP Pro is also a vey good program and you can also buy this online and I think they provide a trial version too.

FTP Voyager from Rhinosoft. I like it and its not really expensive and the license allows upgrades for 2 years.

I'm using WS FTP LE, it's free for non-business use and works very well.

the built in one in your command prompt.  start->run->cmd->ftp.  or if you want more features from your command line FTP, get ncftp.

CuteFTP Pro ... http://www.globalscape.com/cuteftppro/

or

Smart FTP ... http://www.smartftp.com/

CuteFTP Pro if you need Secure FTP and don't want to mess with SSH and tunneling. Simple and easy to use. Not very expensive either.

SmartFTP is another good choice, but it's missing support for Secure FTP.

Why not use the one built into your IE browser?

Simply use this format in the Address bar of your browser:

http://ftp://username:password@ftp.yoursite.net/com as the case may be.
Once into the site, save this as a Bookmark.  Very simple and easy.

Regards,

Dracon - that's perfect!  Never knew that existed. No need for any third party FTP product.

Thanks anyway, everyone else.

the built in FTP is not perfect, far from it. Try using that to connect to a server that only allows one connection per IP and see if you get anything.

Also resumes on download and upload aren't supported.

I also don't think it supports PASV mode.

Your Welcome :)  Hey nice to C U here, SCRMBL.  Flown with you and seen you up in WBs for a long time.

Viperman, he did say simple........I just use it for my Homepage.  It supports Drag and Drop.  Quick and Easy, No hassel.  You obviously have need for much more.  Whats PASV Mode??

PASV or Passive mode is a mode that allows the client to initiate the data connection as opposed to the server.

This is especially useful in situations were a firewall is between the client and the server. I've found that it also reduces the load on the server.

I was wrong however about the built in IE, it supports PASV mode, in fact it is on by default.
