Better Pc = Uber Pilot (well an advantage maybe)
« on: April 27, 2003, 07:28:56 PM »
ok well, haven't been flying much recently but have just upgraded my pc to:

Athlon XP 2400
Asus A7n8x delux
Hercules radeon 9700 PRO128 mb
 512mb pc3200 ram
cable broadband

this is from a:

Asus A7V
1.1ghz athlon
geforce 2 gts 64 mb
512mb pc133 ram
cable broadband

but anyway the point is in my first three sorties in 2 months (very outta practic) and I get 15 kills for 0 deaths, all air 2 air kills

11 kills = 109g10
4 kills = Ta152

I have never done this well so it must be down to better pc, so my question is: are the Uber pilot really good or do they just have Uber PC's + connects, because if I can do this well (very average pilot) surely anyone can given the advantage of a good pc and connect?

I've always thought this but never been able to quantify it but now I can see the benifits myself.

Gives me more respect for guys like slowhand and Furball (pre new pc) that used to kick arse on their slow machines.

would be interesting to see what the guys in the shootout have for machine Specs and latency.

:)

Well I HOPE that's it...

Add to that broadband connects and that would go along way in explaining why I suck..

I'm two steps from suckin on a gunbarrel at this point..

XP1700
Soltek SL-75DRV5
Triplex Silver GeForce4 Ti 4200 64mb 3.3ns
256 mb Corsair XMS DDR PC3000
60gb Maxtor HD ata133

thats the main stuff..i use a Supra Express modem to connect.  Earthlink is my ISP and I generally have very low latency and pings in the 120ms range.

As far as the shootout goes...i don't figure to have a prayer but what the heh....

Only difference I noticed when I went from a P3 800mhz/TNT2 to an XP2200+/gf4ti4200 was the ability to ID dots at  long ranges (from higher res), and to read my ammo counter without zooming in on it (also from higher resolution).  Once I'm in a dogfight, the new PC is no real advantage except framerates and higher res, which is just eye candy anyway.

Yea, its probably a small advantage depending on how crappy your system is.  If you get 5 frames per second, you'll be to choppy to fight so it doesnt really matter how good you are.  High FPS (probably 50 and up) would probably increase your accuracy since the planes won't skip across the screen.

don't know if this is true in aces high or not.......................... .

I have 2 computers on a home lan

comp1) 2.4ghz g force3 ti 64mg
comp2) 8oomgz. gforce 4 mx 64 mg

i lined up two identical cars (midtown madness 2) on a straight road and raced them.  I would have thought they would have tied, but with the slower computer car with lower frame rates.....

the better computer car CRUSHED the other car.  not even a close race

i think i'll line up 2 ponys on my lan and see if this is the same here also.

Uber pc get more kills !

i think not , but a machine running Aces High on 70 Fps or more is good , but thats not youre computer but youre G-Card . I run a :

Xp1700
G-Force 4 128 DDR

thats the Computer and it runns AH on steady 85 fps

But the computer and G-Card aint everything , most people tend to forget there monitor . i have a

Sony 24 " Widescreen RGB monitor

That gives you "true" colors (RGB connectors sending 3 split colors in diffrent cables to monitor ) . Im running 1280x920 and with that ressulotion i have larger enemys then most people have making aiming easyer .

having gone from a 333 p2 with a decent vid card (5-35fps, depending) to a 2.6 p4 with a fiiiiine vid card (steady 85fps, except at times it may drop to maybe 50's if extremely busy area), i'll be the first to say the biggest difference is in hit %...

a smoother view 85 compared to say 25 makes it easier to line up on targets. other than this increase from avg 7% to 11% in gunnery, there's not much difference.

but... it doesn't help me get into position for shots any better.

i'd say if someone averages a steady 40+ fps there will not be much difference.... it's when one falls below 25fps that things get harder to hit.

I think above a certain functinal level it doesnt matter as much. Like everything else there is a decreasing marginal return effect.

If your system can give you 30-35 fpm during the fight with many enemy planes around, it is ok. If it can't -- then you shall go for upgrade. Find a bottleneck, the component which gives you a most performance hit, and change it. AH is an old game, it does not require a moster computers. Even AHII has a testing system which is well bellow todays mid end gamers systems, so I think that even with AHII many people will not need an upgrade.

Aces High depends on the video-card more than anything. The processor doesn't really need to be that good to get good framerates. Unlike non-multiplier games there aren't really any ai to speak of that requirces it's power.

I'm running on an extremely skewed setup, with a P3-800 and a GF4 Ti4400, and I can get 50+ FPS in just about any situations. It's a decent improvement over when I ran it with a GF2, but like someone said, if you got around 30 FPS during normal firing situations it's not really noticeable.

I remember a HUGE difference when I changed from my P2-300 + Voodoo 2, that only at best situations gave me 20 FPS. Suddenly gunnery (and following a bogey at tree-top level) was so much easier.

Blank - definitely. I remember languishing in WB with an AMD450MHz K6-3. Flying the 109F I would have to POUR ammo onto a target just to get it smoking. Sometimes he would jink out, and nail me - the first few rounds having done nothing more than to alert him to my presence.

Two years ago, I upgraded to the current AMD Athlon 1.2GHz and Elsa Gladiac Ultra vidcard. (Gives me 60-80 fps in AH flights). And the very next thing I did was to get a 7-kill sortie in the same 109F. Only a few rounds needed.  It's in those snapshot situations that you'll see the most difference.

Up untill just a few months ago I was still using a P-II 350.  My FPS were from 25 down to 5.  It made it really hard to fight well.

My new machine usually pegs out at 100.
