The base flashing thing is ok, but it really sucks when your
approaching an airbase under dar.  How about shortening the
distance that an under dar attacker has to be to an nme base
before it starts flashing?

how about you bring enough people in the first place?

Hmmm..nice reply there shane.  What do you mean?   If I have
100 people ib to a base under dar, would the base not flash?
Put down the pipe, step away, partys over.

What is the point of going NOE if the damm base flashes
5 minutes out?

The base flashing reflects the fact that it would be near impossible to get to an airfield without passing over someone who would report a raid inbound.  While the system is far from perfect, it is more realistic than planes appearing with absolutely no warning.

As for the distance, I think it starts flashing at only 10 miles or so (haven;t paid attention lately).  At 240 mph, that would only take 2.5 minutes to cover which isn't a lot of time to muster an adequate defense against a well planned and adequately manned attack (kinda goes back to what Shane said).

2.5 minutes (although I think it is a bit longer thatn that)
is enuff time for an la7 to go from engine off to just under
7k alt.

Although the point here isnt ' why does the base flash?', it is
'why does the base flash the same for under-dar attacks and
in-dar attacks?'
I agree with the base flashing, i just think it should be  shorter
for NOE attacks.

Heck....a well planned attack is almost impossible to stop if done at all properly.....which of course almost never happens :D

I posted a thread about some suggestions and this was one of the things I was touching on.  How about a way to 'confuse', 'scramble', or shorten the effectiveness of the nme radar?  Like 'window' for example used by the British late in the war, or the other method they used to shorten the effectiveness of German radar on the route to Berlin using matching wavelengths (?).  There could be a loadout in a mosquito or other aircraft that has 'radar jamming' capabilities or something.

I feel the pain for the under-dar raid, but agree with hammer on the lookout thing.

Just brainstorming...

Well yea, you could mess with the radar, but you couldn't mess with the guy on the ground screaming into the phone "a bunch of @#$@%@#^%#$^ planes just went roaring over my head towards your field!  Scramble!"

Heck, the Flying Tigers used a system of people on the ground signalling each other to warn them of incoming raids.  The Coastwatchers in the Southeast Pacific served the same purpose.  I choose to believe that the 'base flash' represents those people on the ground, which would make perfect sense.
