Finally got around to buying BF1942.....
« on: May 01, 2003, 11:48:20 PM »
But the instructions are entirely in Dutch.  Someone wanna tell me what the shreck is going on in this game and fill me in on mods and stuff?

And does anyone else have a problem with it crashing (unpatched til I get my ADSL - probably by monday - 8Mb!) on anything higher than 800 x 600?

You need those patches, mate. It was very buggy on first release - now it's actually very stable.

It's not the most complicated game in the world. Basically just have to capture a series of flags around each map to gain points for yourself and reduce the number of respawn 'tickets' the other side has, without dying too many times in the process (which would reduce the tickets on your side). When the ticket reaches zero, it's game over.

http://www.desertcombat.com is the best mod - based on the 1st Gulf War.

ok couple questions.

Does the AI in single player actually respond to requests (like for a medic or reinforcements, etc) cos I havn't had a medic show up on demand yet?

Is the planes-flying-backwards-on-a-closed-throttle bug fixed in a patch or is that a local config issue?

And how on earth do ya look around in a plane?

Is there any way to have the map display show the location of rearm / medical stations?

Um.....prolly more coming.

Dunno about single player - never played it.

That's not a bug - they don't actually fly backwards, it just means you can go in reverse on the ground. I think about 5% of the throttle is in the reverse direction.

You can map it so the mouse is used to look around. I did it once but never bother to look around while flying - use external views. It's not a sim.

No.

Ya know......the more I play the more it reminds me of Day of Defeat.

Prolly cos I'm forced to run it at 8 x 6, maybe diff once patched if I can whack the res up to max without it crashing.

It looks a lot better than DoD. And the maps are huge.

And DoD doesn't have plane, tanks, battleships, carriers, submarines or choppers. ;)

Does OFP have 50 player servers and instant pick up and play appeal? ;)

They are two very different games, if you ask me.

BF1942 is good for a quick blast. Get the desertcombat mod - the choppers are excellent.

Now now boys...play nice.

Q.  Does the AI in single player actually respond to requests (like for a medic or reinforcements, etc) cos I havn't had a medic show up on demand yet?

A.  My experience is that the AI does not respond to requests.  That is just for multi-player IMO.

Q.  Is the planes-flying-backwards-on-a-closed-throttle bug fixed in a patch or is that a local config issue?

A.  Sorry man...I don't know.  I don't fly in BF1942.

Q.  And how on earth do ya look around in a plane?

A.  I'm pretty sure there are view keys.  Look in Options/Controls/Aircraft.

Q.  Is there any way to have the map display show the location of rearm / medical stations?

A.  Damn good question..I was wondering the same thing.  Let me know.

I sent ya an e-mail...and check the boards here.

We will be playing tonight..but it may just be a few of us. Late for you..9.00pm EST...let me know.

We have to choose servers right before we play...they fill up quickly and go "up" and "down"...so you can't tell until right before we play.

The server will either be an EA or NVidia server...there are loads of them.
