Request for ACM training
« on: May 06, 2003, 10:32:10 AM »
Hi Guys....

I am requesting some ACM training.  I consider myself a decent pilot but have been running up against some TRUE ACES and have been having my arse handed to me.

I would really like to get with someone to help "show" me the ACM and practice them.  I have read Shaw's book 10 times and sometimes putting what he says into action is pretty hard.

I fly a new plane every arena.  Did the Dora a while back, Pony, LA7....currently working on the C205.

I will be avail all day today (Tues) and tomorrow (Wed).....

Any help would be appreciated.

PS I know all the views, commands, etc.  I have fairly good flight knowledge as I fly on my own privately and I am in the USAF.  Thanks again!

I'd help ya but im not available those 2 days but i'll give you 2 good tips :)

#1:  Flaps-  Very important to get them to overshoot and get angle, they can make some people say how the fu** did he do that :)

#2:  Throttle Management:  If someone gets on your 6 try to do some rolls.. As you are coming down from the top part of the roll chop throttle and put a couple clicks of flaps down.

That's all i can think of right now.

Shoot me an email... My squad rides tonight, but, I can help you for an hour or so around 8PM CST if you are available.

If you are really serious about learning, go to the dueling arena a lot & get on the dueling ladder.  There are some very good sticks there, and most are willing to help you learn... Film everything...

In general you have a couple of considerations when you talk about "dog fighting". Since your gonnafly the 205 this tour will focus on that plane. All in all it does well as long as it has E and it performs well up to mid-alt...over 20k or so it falls off pretty badly. You want to burn your wing tanks1st...it'll make a big difference in handling.

Now the biggest problem in ACM is having either too much E or not enough...if you engage from an advantage then you want to fight "from the top down" the 205 is great in the verticals...just don't go under the con if possible. The 205 isreally a nice angles fighter it will behave well has decent climb and acceleration and the 2 x20mm (map the 20mm and 12.7mm mg's seperately so you knowwhats hitting) doesn't seem to fall of the table as much as the german 20mm does. The key is not to get caught as a tweener...to much E for angles and not enough E control an E fight. You can fight pretty much anything in a 205 till you run out of E, obviously yaks, spit9's, P-38's 109 G6's are toughest since they are "double superior" but not so much they cant be beat.

I tend to like to start to angle fight the 205 immediately...give up some E to get a positional edge...see how the other guy fights in close...alot of the time you'll find even good sticks dont fly as good a defensive "E-fight" as they do an offensive one.  If the other guy opens with an E fight then I know where I stand and can work the angles...I'll try and keep the fight high, then break nad reload, try again then do it one last time...you need 3-4k of room to reload 205 back up a bit...again dont get speed to high...less your trying to run...once you get to 300 you want to bleed it back off working the overshoot...the 205 only needs one nice shot most of the time.

A squaddie has been asking for help in fighters.  I saw him in the MA today and offered to play around in the TA.  I consider myself a semi-adequate dweeb, but tried to help anyways.

We launched and played tag.

Ren, an AH trainer, non-intrusively asked if anyone in the arena had any questions.  I told him our situation and asked if he'd care to join us.  He accepted.

Ren was gracious and generous with his time.  He worked with three of us.  Frankly, he wore me out.  I flew and watched and listened as he worked with others.  I flew, watched, and listened as he worked with me.  I rode as an observer in his plane.  We sat in the tower and talked.

His patience and enthusiasm never flagged.  My brain finally felt as if I was drinking from a firehose.  He'd have kept on.  I had to quit to let it sink in.

In all my time in AW and AH,  I'd never worked with a trainer.  {Insert jokes here, you jerks.}  If the other trainers are like Ren, flying and talking in the TA will be a rewarding experience.  Try it.

Ren.

Ren is top shelf, the pure quill, the real deal.

He's been doing it for a LONG time without being an officail trainer. After a lot of emails & pleading  I finally got him accepted officially.

There are others out there almost as good
who also have given tons of time & energy. Keep the faith, your day is coming.

If you would like to setup a time with him or one of the other trainers email

Gooss...

What surprises me is how few requests we get...  Very few players ask for help...  I'm not sure why...  Anyone have any ideas?

We (the trainers) ALL volunteered to help people...  All are very good and can really smooth out the learning curve for new pilots.

All it takes is an email...:)

To add to what has been already said, the Trainers can help you with anything too, not just ACM.  If you feel you just want to ask some general questions, or just take a tour, we can help with that too.

I can't count the number of times I've shown something, like custom views, that simply change the game for people yet they didn't know about until that point.
