I'm told this software costs big $$. Can someone tell me what is so special about it?

no, its not like paintshop, you build 3d objects with.....anything 3d.....movies like toy story were done on software like 3d studio max.

here u can take free version of g-max, it looks like 3dmax but not have som option. And is oriented to export to developers pack.
So what do u create its for view in this program or convert to som games by special plug ins

editor parts have same option and philosophy like 3d max /its cut version/

U use this software to bulid and model 3d objects, skin them, render /add textures ,sun shadows, atmospheric effects/  and animate. U can buils single stage or whole animation movie.

Software is user friendly, what nots mean is easy to learn.
Simple shapes, objects u can create easy. But core of this software is in special deformation tools, building nurbs spaces and many more.
3dmax have allmost everything what is need for 3d modelling
Cost a lot but its worth this money if u use them proffesional.
In this class u can find couple other programms, based on similar pholosoply and same usefull.

Som free or sharwere programms can do similar things, but not so easy and not with this quality

Look at gallery on webpage, and u cold see what can be created using this soft.

You can get 3D Studio Max much cheaper via a student license (hundreds of dollars rather than thousands).

Gmax isn't much use unless your are building models for a game which has been integrated with it via a plugin (e.g. M$ FS2002, CFS3).

She's learning to build web pages and uses paint shop alot. Now that you mentioned it, she said something about 3d modeling. I guess she wants to learn it.

Well, it seems like something that may be worth buying if she is going to learn from it.

Much more than a paint program... took me an hour to figure out how to model a cube.  She's gonna need a good deal of dedication to get good with this program.  But when she does, wow...

A friend of mine has been using 3dsmax for a few years now.  He just models stuff (mostly star wars things) as a hobby.

If she like to learn modeling better lets start from smth cheaper
or from free g-max /same interface like 3d max/.
Spend a lot of money for learning 3d modeling is not worth to buy this software. Waste of money. ANd mostly for proffesional use
If u have too much money i can give my account number;)

Looks at HT theread on terrain part of bb "need 3d editor"
there is listed som good softwares for cheap money or free.
She can start to learn from that. IMho its enough to start

Well, now that it's been mentioned, a friend of mine down in texas mentioned getting software as a student real cheap. Gonna look into that, if not i'll check out the cheaper software. Thnx for the info.

Its very inexpensive and is full of features that will step up and do many of the same things as 3D Studio Max (3DSM) at well below the cost of 3DSM. AC3D is one of the primary 3D programs used in the upcoming Targetware mod Target: Rabaul. It converts over to Lightwave easily from what I understand.

Having just done extensive research in the various 3d software programs I would rank them as follows:

1.  Lightwave
2.  Cinema 4d
3.  Maya and XSi (tie)
4.  3DSMax

Both 1 and 2 are very close in my mind.  Cinema 4d does use a more windows like interface, but I find LW easier to use over all.  Both are much less expensive than Max and with student discount even much less so.
