VE Day

Today is Victory in Europe day, as in the day the Axis were defeated in Europe during WW2.  

VJ is in August, and since it was the end of the whole mess, it is a state holiday in Rhode Island.  I'm not sure if VE or VJ days are celibrated anywhere else.

I'm glad its celebrated somewhere.. its hardly a blip on the evening news here. maybe if they need to fill 15 seconds of airtime.

Its recognized in the southern states, just not as "VE" day.  Rather, its called "WSYA" day. (We saved your ass)

I think it marks the day when they got the informal surrender from the Japanese.

They move Victory Day around to make a three day weekend, so the holiday moves a little from year to year.

In Denmark it is the time of the surrender of the local Wehrmacht forces in the country that is celebrated. This was May 5th, known as "Befrielsen" (The Liberation)
The surrender was announced in the radio May 4th to take effect the next morning for troops in Holland, NW Germany and Denmark.

Edit: The surrender did not included the german forces on Bornholm (the island some hundred miles east of Copenhagen). The commandant here refused to surrender to the russians so they bombed the two largest towns on the island before they landed troops that stayed until April 1946.
