Suggestion for buff defensive guns..
« on: May 12, 2003, 09:45:48 AM »
To 'buff up' the feeling of multi-crew bombers, how about giving buffs the ability to move their gunners to various positions?

For instance, if a gunner at a certain position is dead, but the gun itself is undamaged, maybe one of the waist gunners can move back towards the tail guns and man it..? It'll probably require some sort of separate interface to control the buff gunner crew like that... but I think it would be a fun idea. Maybe something that resembles "B-17II:The Mighty 8th" game? ;).. Or maybe something like a clipboard interface with icons, where you can click+drag icons representing each crew member into different positions of the plane...? :)

That would probably require ummm.. a sort of 'dual' DM, which accounts for not only the exterior structural damage, but also a separate 'IM(?? Injury Modelling?? :D )' for the people inside the buffs. Pretty interesting results may be seen, I think...

 ...

Maybe the Mission Arena, for buff pilots, could give scores for how many crew members came back alive... and stuff.. ;)

I think I would prefer to be able to have multiple Country-mates man the Guns in a Bomber. Allow as many ppl to attach to your plane as you have Gun / Bombedier Positions for.

I think it would be a hoot to see 7 parachutes after nailing a B17. :)

If one of the Gunners is killed they can rejoin. Screw this damaged gun business.

And don`t forget to make the gunners DIE  when you fill their turret with lead and grenades.

I just can`t stand those B26/B17 tail gunners you pump full off bullets while they happily dismantle your a/c with laser-accurate fire.

Watching actual WW2 footage, you see those turrets go dead after they`re fired upon. Also, the real life guys were way more inaccurate.

Also, Gunners get a lot more practice when they don't leave the M.A. Permenantly once they are killed.

It's also hard to aim when you've just dropped a load, and I'm not talking about the nose gunner.

Buff guns should recoil and bounce around more, I think.  The lack thereof is the main reason they are so accurate.

MRPLUTO VMF-323 ~Death Rattlers~ MAG-33

P.S.  The other reason they're so accurate is that way too many pilots give them big easy targets by attacking slowly from dead six.

Yes, Rutilant; sometimes I even slow down for them so they don't get discouraged and go away. :D

Like a FPS, I think the guns should be controlled by the mouse intead of the joystick.

Using the mouse actually simulates firing a gun better because as it recoils, you have to in a way "fight" the gun with your mouse to get it to stay aimed.  If the gun recoils up, you have to struggle to get it back down by moving the mouse down.

Just think it would work better using the mouse.

I have no problem with the current control method.. Recoil is modeled, but on the entire plane, not the turret.. They have to reverse that..

acepilot - the joystick works.. i say they keep it.. *Unless* you had full plane control with the joystick and could aim turret while doing aerobatics.. Then if you stall-fought something like the 110 and got on it's six, that 7.9mm would become quite usefull for him, as would many other rear facing guns on fighter/bombers.. especially those of the A20.

I think the only reason everyone thinks the buff guns are so lethal is because every gun fires at the same target.
Take this situation, there are two 109s on a Lancs six low n high. The tail gunner could shoot lower whilst the top gunner would shoot at the higher one. In real life each gunner fired at what he saw and not at what the other gunner was firing at. In AH if in the top u shoot at the high 109, the tail fires at him as well. Meaning that 109 is getting all the firepower whilst the other is free to wreack  havoc. If all different guns fired at their own targets i think the lethal laser weapon issue would die away. The simplest solution I think is to give buff guns AI like the acks. NOT TO SAY that a player cannot join as gunner. Whenever a player goes into a gun the AI should simply disengage FOR THAT GUN ONLY. The  others should still remain under AI control. Also since AI is not very accurate all the bouncing guns and kickback issues woudnt occur.
