Can anyone remember when....
« on: May 12, 2003, 04:35:57 PM »
I was talking to a squadmate the other day and the topic went on to base captures & gooning...

Can anyone remember when you could do a low alt (20ft), high speed troop drop in a C47 over the airfield to capture the base?  IIRC there was no maproom and as soon as all 10 troops hit the ground they captured the base!  This was even before we had asphalt runways - we just had a 'dusty' type runway!  Think it must have either been beta or early Tour 1/2?

A small airfield only had two ack too.... but boy were they uber ack! ;)  This was also before GVs!

I miss WB 1.X base capture.  You had to land and exit safely OTR.

You sure it was not in some other game Nexx?

I remember troops had to flow to ground from 500ft+ in AH, also small base always had 8 acks, though lethality were absolutly deadly (were impossible to kill them with jabo, needed buffs).

May be it was before me, though I joined AH in an early beta.

Fariz is right about the ack , pretty much had ta have a bomber take it out. Best way to stop a base capture was kill the buffs.

Don't know about the 20 ft drops Nexx , do remember watching Beemer skid in gear down to let troops out tho:)

way, way, way back in the history of AH small bases did indeed have only 2 acks, and woe to the one who got inside thier envelope.  After alot of trial error it was discovered how you could take them out with jabo, but it took alot of practice cause you had to drop the egg/fire the rocket from real high.

I remember when the troop drop alt was made 700ft+ AGL too.  And when B-17s didnae have any guns on them.  Oh I cussed plenty back in those days.  And the surprise the fighter jocks got when my -17 finally got guns (I was pretty much a dedicated buff driver in the open beta tour days :D )

Yeah Cavey, I remember that. grrrrrr

Those acks were mean, I remember a cry of sheer joy when I was able to get one ack out of 12, tossing a 1K lbs eggs from above 8 thousand feet.

The thing I miss the most were those huge B17 flights with escort. Be it from the escort side, or the intercepting side.

I remember the drop alt meaning nothing for troops as well. I seem to remember there always being a map-room tho. Was fun the version it was changed to the current +800ft agl. Never have so many drunks get splattered over so many bases, by people who don't read the readme.

I also remember the killing acks, they had no dispersion, so you flying straight at 9K was a sure way to get killed. Didn't all structures take 500lbs to kill back then, from ack to tower (which acted as the radar), and you had to hit it DEAD center for it to register the damage.

Am I just imagining things or could you kill the runway? Not much point other than the enemy could only get a ditch, or did it control the spawn ability? (before hangars came into play)

Weren't the La-5FN also in the first release?

My first flight I flew over the mountain range and performed the first of what was to be many HO on a bad guy.  Seen an airfield and was going to fly over it to see what would happen.  I didn't even get close before the ack knocked me out of the air.

Yep!  Remember the B-17s with no guns!

I flew the Mustang my first few sorties due to I did not know how to change planes.

AH was a ball back then (OCT 1999).

Definitely only 2 ack per small airfield, diagonal to each other - I still have a beta/version 1 copy of AH but I'm not going to load it up.  I think it went to 8 ack per small field in about Tour 3?

Also the troops could be released at any altitude, no max/min alt.  The 800ft AGL was introduced in a later version.

I think there always was a map room, at the field... no cities, but I don't think the troops enterred it back then. I don't think the runways could be destroyed, but never messed much with bombing and base capture so I might be wrong.

I remember how the planes didn't want to turn and how hard it was to take off with the torque affects. I thought it was bad, but then HTC brought out the ME109. Taking off in that thing was near impossible even using auto pilot. I later found out I had a problem with my joystick and rudder pedals. They wouldn't work right with my new computer so I didn't have any precise control... it was all or nothing =o[

Some runways were so short I couldn't take off without going past the end. There were some on top of a mountain with cliffs all around. I used to go off the cliff and fall untill I had enough speed to fly. And landing was hard... all the drag (like prop drag) weren't modeled yet so the planes didn't want to slow down. I think you needed 10 mile finals.

I remember the "Buffs heaven field" on a mountain at 10000 feet. Think it was somewhere around v.1.3
For a quick buffing a great thing.
