Sharon does not want peace for Israel...
« on: May 13, 2003, 09:53:02 AM »
Anyone read the news today?

Sharon took a hard line on West Bank settlements, outlining at least 3 Jewish Settlements in the west bank that he intends to maintain soveriegn control over.

So much for the Road Map to Mideast peace.

Too bad no one in Washington has the balls to step up and put some pressure on this guy.

It seems all too simple to me. Give up the West Bank, or give up US Support. What's it going to be Sharon?

LOL of cource it seems simple to you. Your not a politician. Neither do you have to take a million different considerations into the picture.

Armchair quarterbacking at its best. While you're at it, could you find a cure for SARS too?

Do you have something to add, or do you just spend your time looking to insult people?

What you are going to see in the next few months is this:

A basic premise for peace..in this case a "Road Map" - DONE.

Certain conditions will then be set upon the agreement.

The Israelis will say that all violence against its citizens must stop before they will sign anything.

The Palestinians will then say that all settlements must be removed before they sign.

Israel will say that no preconditions need to be met...the violence MUST end before they will consider any direct action.

The Palestinians will say that they will not do anything before the settlements are removed.

It is a "Which comes first..the chicken or the egg?"

Neither party dares move first due to political considerations.

There will be a stalemate.

The whole process will start again in a few years.
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

Isn't there a military tactical reason Israel won't give up the West Bank completely? Seems I read that somewhere but can't for the life of me recall where.

Kind of.  I recalling being told at one point that a tank platoon could basically travel from the East end of Israel to the West end in just about 20 minutes.  Any land serving as a "buffer zone" is worth its weight in gold to Israel.

Yeah that was the jest of the article. In other words, Israel doesn't want to open the back door? Makes sense to me.

A military buffer zone that just happens to be rapidly filling with Israeli settlements?

I think I've heard it all now.

This was England of 300 years ago. Are you saying Israel is at a similar level of political maturity?

I think I agree.

As I see it, the Golan Heights were taken to avoid Syrians having the highlands on the northern border and the Gaza strip was taken for security on the south.  And didn't Israel give back the Sinai after it took it back in the 60s.

Well, its a tit for tat situation over there.  Israel wants its UN given existence to be undisturbed and Palestineans want the total destruction of Israel.
