Need A New Game
« on: May 13, 2003, 09:38:26 PM »
Ok,  My dad and I are tired of MOH and RTCW and we need something new.

Any worthwhile games out there that compare to those above or are better?

Was thinking of getting Ghost Recon series and/or Soldier of Fortune.    There was another I saw (dont remember the name now) that you could fly helicopters, drive vehicles, or solider, but figured anything that tried to do it all might suffer in gameplay or other departments.

Was thinking of starting with some of the older ones from past years and then get one like Rainbow 6 series.

We both like the lone wolf style 1st person shooters instead of the AI-squad based play, or 3rd person views.   Playing in squads online is one thing with at least semi-intellegent people,  relying on a bunch of AI squad members that run out in the middle of the street while a sniper is shooting is just plain stupid.

Battlefield 1942, hands down.  It's got beautiful graphics and the gameplay is very fun.

Raven Shield is fun.

Thanks guys'

Hawklore - Operation Flashpoint, thats the one I couldnt remember,  I looked at it but seemed like it was trying to do too many things in one game.  How does AI and graphics compare to MOH or RTCW?  Mission/Levels, are they more than just running through rooms and kill everybody?

One of the things I liked about MOH and RTCW were the missions where you had to use stealth and avoid detection to beat the level.

Dago - I saw the Raven Shield and that's what got me interested in something other than a WW2 based game.

I hadnt considered Battlefield 1942,  i thought it was more like WW2OL  or Aces High,  and I'm still happy with AH after two years,  didnt want to really get sucked into another flight sim, but I might give that a shot too.

I'll probably get the Ghost Recon and Operation Flashpoint and then let my dad get the Raven Shield or Rouge Spear
Then we can try them out and swap them

thanks for the input ya'll

Vietcong

It just came out a short time ago and I'm having *tons* of fun with it... the multi-player is a blast. I bought this about 2 weeks ago and Battlefield 1942 a week ago, and Vietcong is what I wind up playin' much more often. There's something about that war that I find just spooky... and this game captures it very well for me.

Have a look at the screenshots on that site (I think the terrain is amazing), and try the demo.... there's a multi-player demo and I *think* a single player demo also. My computer aint exactly blazin', yet it plays very smooth at high detail.

If this is what you like, you should definately try Splinter Cell.

Its a clancy/ubi title and stealth is what it all about.

I'd also consider WW2OL... still has many issues but the pro's vs con's are starting to balance out and you can have a lot of fun.

The graphics engine is fairly dated compared to some stuff, but IMHO it does a good job of providing a large environment with viable cover.

Just make sure you have 1Gb of RAM or its a bit of a pig.

Theres a big focus on squads there but I lone-wolf it quite happily. Off-peak US times are fairly quiet, but I expect its reasonably busy during peak US times.

Given the kind of game you're after, if you're looking at some of the slightly older titles, you might want to check out Deus Ex.  Very much lone-wolf type stuff, but with a pretty intricate story line.  And stealth does have its rewards.
