Has he got the mic working correctly in Windows recorder? If it works in that it should work in-game.  He needs UDP as well as TCP to pass through the firewall (if any) for vox.

Also turn down sound acceleration in directX by runing dxdiag from the run command box and testing sound there, and moving acceleration one notch left.

Holy Cow Spiff...

I have been wrestling with my mic dropping out and not working at all for about 6 weeks now...  I turned down the acceleration in DX and it is working like a charm...

Many, many Thanks

I'll add if it's an on-board sound card (AC97 codec) there should be a setting for mic boost to be found in the sound properties which needs to be On, but do NOT turn on auto-gain if that setting is available in the ac97 software, it will kill the volume.

Make sure mic is enabled in the sound recording properties.  As I said above test it in Windows Recorder first (usually in Accessories group) to set the volume correctly and to see if the mic is working correctly first.  If not open sound properties (loudspeaker icon in sys tray), and go to advanced section to check settings.
