Damn you Germans!
« on: May 18, 2003, 08:34:20 AM »
Was just reminded of an incident that happened to me about a year ago...

I ride a Triumph 955i Daytona with a few engine mods. Has 148hp at the rear wheel with a quarter mile time in the mid to low 9's at about 132mph, and a top speed of just over 180mph.

That being said, here's the story:

Every Friday, I usually ride about an hour from home to a restaurant that hosts a "bike night" where we all sit around drinking sodas, have something to eat, and gawk at eachother's motorcycles.

I was returning home at around 2 in the morning, happily buzzing down the highway at about 80mph when two Porsche 911 Carerras pulled beside me. They didn't just pull beside me, they came flying up behind me and quickly slowed down to match my speed beside me. I knew full well what they wanted, and debated it for a few seconds. No traffic, late at night, nice open stretch of highway... what the hell...

I've encountered these types of jokers before in their Porsche's, Corvettes, hopped up Mustangs, the list goes on...  They just can't resist trying to beat a motorcycle, and quickly become mere specks in the side mirror.

So I look over at the guy, give him the nod, lay down on the tank, drop it into third gear, and away we go...  After passing through 165mph, I decide to take a look in the side mirror and see how badly I've embarrassed this poor fellow. I could tell he wasn't embarrassed at all because I could SEE his face through his windshield as we were whizzing by the street lights. Kind of an evil looking strobe effect. The guy was right on my butt about a car length behind me.

Passing through 180mph I took another look in the side mirror. Same strobe effect going on, same evil face visible through his windshield. Now it wasn't funny anymore! I could swear I heard a Vincent Price type laugh as well.

Having reached top speed on my motorcycle, he proceeded to change lanes and pull right beside me for a few seconds. I suppose to give me a really good look at his evil face strobing away at me.

Then, he passed me.

Judging from the distance he was putting between us, and my speed of right around 185mph, I would guess the guy was going over 200mph. The other Porsche that was with him was nowhere to be seen (I'm assuming he picked a race with that guy too, and he couldn't keep up with us).

At any rate, this was no ordinary twin turbo Carerra. Anybody know what this thing was? It looked like a normal twin turbo Carerra to me, but it certainly wasn't! I wasn't as much surprised by the top speed of this thing as I was with it's accelleration. He was right on my butt the entire time before he passed me.

What was that thing????

Was it an older body style or newer one?

Ever see that video of an M5 driving a road course in Germany?  He was being trailed by a porsche that was doing all the filming.  These two were blowing all the motorcycles off the road.  The funniest thing was that the M5 was struggling to stay on the track, though going VERY fast, but the Porsche was merrily tagging along for the filming.  I always got the feeling there was tons of HP waiting to be unleashed there.  I believe that was a 996... though I I'll have to look at the film again (or the post in the O'Club that linked to it).

Hey there Mini,

It was an older body style, with the big tail. Not a tail like the 959...  From all outward appearances, it just looked like a regular twin turbo 911 Carerra, early 90's body style.

The 959 is a 200mph car, but it still doesn't accellerate as fast as a motorcycle.... I wanna know what this thing was!

Might have been a group b?  They weren't too dissimilar in looks, but they could out accelerate anything with a top speed near 200 (or over with a little chip tweaking).

Was it silver by chance?

Yeah,

The fast one was silver, the one we left behind was black, but they looked identical...

The body lines would have been nearly identical, with some slightly different fairings.  But the group b had an oval intake bellow the rear side windows.  Other than that, at 180mph, it would be hard to distinguish.

At any rate, I'm guessing the thing definitely wasn't stock whatever it was. It just accellerated WAY too fast, even for a Porsche...

BTW, thanks for the link to the video... What a hoot!!!!

I know... just remember seeing some comment on how it couldn't pass the M5... thought that was very funny.
