Gargoyles were issued during Desert Storm. The kind they gave us provided some ballistic protection too.
I saw shots of guys in the dunes wearing Oakleys, too. I think most of the troops went for the lighweight polycarbonate lenses because of the lighter weight and are less likely to shatter than glass lenses.
