How the heck do you hit anything with ship guns
« on: May 19, 2003, 11:49:10 PM »
Can anybody tell me how the heck to hit things like other ships with the big guns on the Cruiser ?  I can do ok with the land mode thing... but thats not what I want to do... I want to aim and vector in on my targets by sight not by clicking the mouse on a map

I have messed with the F8 view and moved my line of sight around so I can see where I am hitting,  but damned if I can hit anything...  Is there something I am missing ??? (besides the target)  Do you use the range reading and the reading on the right of the range reading to vector in on the target ?

With the 5" guns ack setting... Do you lead the planes ?  How much per 1000' ?  And the guns on the destroyers ???  I don't even mess with them I am so bad :(

I sure would like to hear from some of you guys that I see sinking ships and blasting planes outta the skies ....

Thanks

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but for me it is trial and error.  I use land mode only when the task force is out of visual range of the target.  Other than that, I basically just walk my shells to the target.  I don't mean that I randomly fire at will, I make educated guesses first, ie the sector is 25 miles, if I have about a thrid of a sector, I'll set my range to be just over 8k and fire away.

As far as the 5" guns are concerned, I've hit targets well in excess of 6k out.  I've also gotten quite a verbal bashing from the players who went down because of it.  Mostly, I'm relatively accurate from 3.5k and in.  The best way I found for leading aircraft is to practice offline.  I will jump to the rooks and in the cv I'll watch where the AI ack is leading.  I can pop those drones out of the sky with relative ease.  From there into the MA, it's just a matter of judgement.  Guessing the enemy's speed and relative angle to determine your lead amount.  The best advice is just to put as many shells into the air as possible and watch where they are falling in relation to your target.  Popping the incoming suicide dorks is best practice.  Especially the waves of low-flying JU88 formations praying to drop their fish...

Boot, there is also a ship-to-ship mode for the TG guns ("Sea" mode, I believe).  You might need to map a key for it it in the Keyboard mapping screen.  I've not messed with it much, so I'm not sure exactly what it does.  I usually train my gun manually.  I set the mouse pointer just under the target when I train the gun out in azmuth, and hold it there after I pull the trigger using the joystick.  You see, the cursor stays in the same position on the screen no matter where the "picture" moves.  When the shell splash occurs, I can see its position relative to the mouse cursor.  If the splash occurs to the left of the mouse, I know how far to slew the gun to the right to bring the shell on target.  Again while holding the gun on my new aim point I move the cursor once again to be just under the target and pull the trigger.  Again, while the shell is in flight I move the joystick to keep the mouse cursor on the target (by moving the joystick, not the mouse).  This time, the shell should land much closer.  Once I get a hit, I just maneuver the gun to keep the mouse cursor on the target and fire at will.  Note that you also have to keep adjusting the gun elevation as well, as you will seldom be on exactly parallel course with your target.  Hope that made sense to you.

I have a hard time hitting ships w the big guns also, but what seems to work best is the divide and conquer mehtod.  First, shoot an intuitive shot at the nme ship.  If you land short, which is what usually happens, make a mental not e of the range.  Then,  increase range by 2.0k, keeping in mind the range each time, until u go to far.  then just split the diff.  usually when u get it down to a 1k difference, you will start to get hits.

I set the mouse pointer just under the target ...

I place my finger on the screen for a point of reference, after I watch the splash, I adjust my fingers location and fire again.  Once you get close, you can zero in quickly.  It's faster and eaier then using the cursor, but leaves fingerpints all over the screen :)
