I went to an airshow this weekend here in Munich (Unterschleissheim - interesting history at this airfield!). There was a 109 (ostensibly G-2) at the show, but I'm puzzled. The sign pictured below says that its first flight was on the 28th of May 1935.

I thought the G-2 came much later. Can a 109 history expert help me out here?

in nearly all my books the bf109v1 first flew in september 1935..using a rolls royce kestrel engine...the Gmodle 109 was the most numerious being produced between 1941 and 1945..

i guess the info on the board is for the bf 109 family not the g2

I hadn't thought of that. You're probably right that they mean the 109 in general first flew in 1935. Too bad I didn't get to see this one fly (not sure if it did - no markings whatsoever).

There aren't that many flying 109's around.  Is this one a replica or the real thing?

I was thinking the same thing RA, Thought almost all of them were destroyed and what remaining ones are grounded...


Looks flimsy like a kit but all 109's look flimsy in the first place...


rare sight indeed if it is real....

it is an former CASA (spanish) produced one.
they rebuilt is as an 109g2,but only for static dsiplay.

the flying 109g6 is still under rapair after their engine failur at last ILA, and the g10 had an big engine failur too.
so, 2 out of 3 flying 109's worldwide are grounded...and they think about leaving them down for all time.

The Messerschmitt foundation in Manching belongs to EADS and they own (i guess) 3 109 whereby the 109 G6 "FM + BB" and the Bf 109 G-10 "Schwarze 2" are in "flyable" condition.

The 109 G2 is a Ha 1109 K-1L Werknummer 54 built 1948.

I believe there is a flyable 109E in California.  Marseilles himself had some flights in that particular plane.

There is a 109 here in Texas at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in  Addison.  I wanna say its an "F" model, but I may be totally wrong on that....I havent been there in a while.  I believe that it is flyable, but I dont think they ever take it up.

I don't speak German, so maybe I didn't see it listed, but I read in "Flight" magazine that a 109E was discovered in a junk yard in India, disassembled, with DB601 motor but a broken motor mount.  Apparently the 109E was a gift to the Indian government during WW2 as a token for their support but at some point the aircraft was grounded for lack of spare parts and eventually ended up in the scrap yard.  I think it was sold to a private firm and scheduled for restoration.
