The rise in the mighty Canadian dollar
« on: May 23, 2003, 08:21:47 AM »
YEA!

I bought a Condo in Toronto by borrowing US dollars and converting at the rate in effect at the time.  The rate was about 70 cents to the dollar then.  By the time I sold the unit the rate had dropped to 54 cents.  I was looking at about a 15k exchange loss and just could not stomach taking a hit like that..so I kept it in CDN$ and invested in some Canadian Bonds crossing my fingers that the rate would improve.

I have just instructed the bank to exchange my cash.  The rate for an average customer is now almost 73 cents, but in the interim my wife started working at the bank.  Spouses get the bank employee rate...which is significantly better.

I guess I should thank Bush.

;)
