is comcast just an isp who's e-mail server you're trying to connect too?

Most are set up as POP3 servers.  Make sure you get the specific POP email server addy for the tools\accounts\properties\server info.

what ripsnort said, add that "pop3" is your server, "mail" goes in the box after server

Incoming mail and outgoing mail usually use same POP3 server, if I had to guess i would say they are both

mail.comcast.net

Tried all the above, including deleting all dialups attached to Outlook and removal of 56k card earlier before I posted.  Still no luck...Outlook wants a dial up, I put in the proper pop3, login (which I assume is the same as their webpage for email) etc. but it can't establish a connection.

Oh, and connection type is PPoE. It keeps wanting to go back to a dial up connection, even though I set it up for a Cable, constant on, no phone number required.(its set to LAN)

Try setting the connection to "Any Available" don't force it to use a specific one. I have two ID's setup on this box and one is for company and they require smtp.xxxxx.com for the outgoing email along with checking the server requires authentication box.

The incoming and outgoing servers are probably not the same for Comcast.

Incoming may be POP3, but does not have to be.  Outgoing is SMTP.

You need to find out what the incoming and outgoing servers are, whether they both require authentication (a lot of ISP's are using authentication on thier SMTP servers), and what mail protocols they are using for inbound (POP3, IMAP...).

Just ask them Rip.  Once you are armed with that information, you can setup Outlook.

mail.comcast.net is the inbound server, but it apparently is not the outbound server Rip.  The error you are getting is during a send process as port 25 is the SMTP port.

You should use mail.comcast.net for pop3 and smtp.comcast.net for smtp (read this again http://www.comcast.com/Support/Corp1/FAQ/FaqDetail_1537.html). According to your screenshot you use wrong server for smtp.
If it still not working - check "ipconfig /all" and make sure there is a DNS server in the output.

I had a similar situation, but the problem was that my isp was not using the standard ports.  Might want to find out what ports you need to point OE to.
