Looking at my version 1 P38 ....still no replacements.

[/topic] BUG - it's getting more and more difficult to find LRP (lead replacement petrol) for the beetle. The ignition timing is OK for unleaded, but I'm not certain that the valves/valve seats can sustain the pumelling they get without a cushion of lead, so I use LRP. What do you use?

LOL - I'm complaining about valve "hardness". Makes me sound like a non-strat strat-whiner - especially as we're talking about fuel. ROFL!

I have a 1964 VW Beetle 1300 and when California finally phased out regular gas, I had my valves bored out and replaced with new valves with bigger heads and started using a higher octane gas. Every 4,000 miles when I tune it up, I check the valves and they're no worse for the wear. Don't even have to use a regular leaded gas additive.

I think the best way to go is what Ack-Ack says, hardened valves and valve seats will do the trick. Will not be extremly cheap though.

Drive a 1971 Opel Kadett, a proud 1100cc General Motors product. Engine is 100% original but I add additives for cars that need leaded fuel. If you don't really stress your engine this works fine too.

I also own a Volkswagen T3 camper from 1981 and I haven't got a clue if this needs leaded fuel or not... (bought it quite recently) maybe Beetle knows. The engine is a 1900cc air cooled one. And it won's start at the moment but that's another story...

GetT new cylinder heads that can resist unleaded feul.

oh when those heads are off it's easy to replace the cylinders for 1600 cc ones.

U need an another carburator though.

For the rest u will be amazed how long u still can drive on those old heads
