It would be really interesting to see which Piston engined aircraft had a top speed of over 469.22 mph. Also it would be interesting to see what the criteria were for setting a record. That may be the single hold up to having the record stand for 30 years.

Well the record was prolly done at low altitudes where its very likely that the Bf209 was faster than anything until that 3000hp Bearcat. Look at the speeds that the best unlimited P51s post at Reno they all top out in the 450-460mph range and thats with highly modified airframes, babied tuned engines, no weapons, no armor, no weapons pylons, glossy paint and all - but they hit those speeds down low. Now compare that to the full combat ready P51H which posted a top speed of almost 490mph but at 25k at lower alts its in the low 400mph range.

Does anyone have a picture of the 460 mph clipped winged Heinkel 100?

109 and 209 designs were being produced way before any Mustang or Corsairs were even being dreamt of.

The Spitfire design comes in simular periods with the BF aircraft, tho.. I've heard people putting the Schneider-Cup winning Supermarine Sealion series in it's lineage.. but honestly, I don't think there's a 'Spitfire' before 1934 - putting the Sealion in the Spitfire lineage seems a bit ridiculous to me.

Then obviously you shouldn't have said "ripped off".
