Its story time.......Its a long one.
« on: May 28, 2003, 06:13:31 PM »
So there I was....

Tired of furballing I decided to do something I hardly ever do.... A bombing sortie. Convinced that I can bomb just as good as the masses I take up a flight of b26's from A63 to A1 heading north and climbing. My squadie beside me in his errr 1 B26. "what the heck you only have 1 B26", I ask. "Your kidding", he says. "Damn I forgot to select formation"...Oh well we push on . Low and behold there are 2 262's in the area. Well you know what happens, that was a short sortie.

So I up again when the coast was clear. My squadie is in front of me this time in 3 B26's. We begin our climb. At this time I did what all great bombers in the game do. I went and got a bowl of cereal. Upon my return I gently place the huge bowl of Lucky Charms on the desk. I notice my squadie 4.5k to my 12oclock. So I bark at him again,"Dude you are 4.5k in front of me slow down".
"OK" he says then asked, " Are your flaps down still?"...Doooh!!!! "errr yes"... "Thats why",he says. He then proceeds to tell me there is a f4u4 tailing me. I the switch to my rear gun. I see the bogey low. He zooms up. I shoot I miss. The tail of my B26 fall off after 1 pass.
Calmly I ask my squadie, "How do I change planes?" He says "ctrl and plane you want to goto." Check I did it. He says " Hurry up and switch". "I did" I said. At this time my planes start to tumble down. Find out that when you switch, one must go to the drivers seat first. Thats just great...

Still convinced I can do this I up the dreaded B17. Its a perfect time to fly. No one around not even my squadie. So I climb north east of A1. At this time I can finally eat me lucky charms. With A1 at my nine I turn towards my intended target and prepare to drop hvy thingies from 10k. I finally learned to calibrate so I know I will hit. But wait whats this? NOOOO not a 262!!!! Atleast this sortie lasted longer. But not giving up without a fight I jump in my tail gunners spot. He zoomz up I open fire and with a wall of lead he's cut in half. Man was that a lucky shot since I suk as a gunner. Onward I go. Pumped up from the kill. I feel like I did when I got out of marine corps bootcamp...Like I can take on the world. About to hit my target I see a spit and a f4u4 in my views. But I must deliver the hvy thingies so I press on .

I stay in my bomb site I feel the f4u4 closing. Like star wars I kept telling myself to, "STAY ON TARGET". There I drop my load switch to rear gun and open up. f4u4 is down. Strange tho I only hit 2 fuels and a gun. Should have torn the base apart with 36 500lbs bombs between my 3 b17's. but oh well maybe calibration was off a little. Now I can focus on spit. So I decide to turn towards home with spit in my views. I jump in the pilots seat and what do you know, 8 bombs drop. hmmm I guess thats why I didnt level A1. Note to self.." Must wait til all bombs drop before getting into gunner spot" Onward home I go spit still in tow. But wait I see a stang diving on me. Jump in the top turret and hes smoked. For some reason the spit seems to be escorting me. He has not attack.

I can smell jet fuel in the air. Something tells me to look around. NOOOOOO!!!!!! not another 262. Like the first one hes coming in low and from my 6.. So as he closes I open up with my wall of lead. Hes pinged but still shooting and closing. I pinged him again Now his engine is smoking. Its only a matter of time before he rips me apart... ooops his hing falls off and hes tumbling. Funny tho the spit is still escorting me. He finnaly decides to attack. Pass after pass he shoots I shoot. My engine is hit. He passes again takes out a drone. Slippery lil bugger. One pass to many he is impatient now ans saddles up on my 6. I bet he wont do that again cus he's toast.

Almost home now I start my descent. As I slow flaps out gears down only 3 engines running and a drone without a scratch. I wipe the sweat from my forhead and reflect on the nights mission and wishing I recorded the whole thing..I only recorded the 2nd 262 kill...(damn).... There is peace all around me. I can almost hear the waves crashing against the shore near A63. On my final aproach and satisfied with all the killing and that I made it home the fact that my drone is pulling ahead of my doesnt even matter. I am happy I have just done a great thing. Then I realize that sound I was hearing wasnt the waves crashing into the shore...ITS A FREAKING PT BOAT AT MY 9 1.5 away and hes pinging me. No tracers just a tumbling b17 500 ft off the deck. Even tried to jump in last bomber but to no avail for they are both in the sea.

Just to show how cruel AH can be. It giveth and it taketh away...

PERK THE DAMN PT BOAT!!!!!

Yep - I remember being shot down by you in a buff. When I read the story I thought - "Typical - he hardly ever flies a buff, I hardly ever fly a Spit and when we meet up jamusta STILL owns me!

I have to admit I was puzzled by your tactics. You followed me for a long time. I almost forgot about you.. I thought I would never get you but you saddled up on me. Did you get impatient or about to run outta fuel or something? That mission was alot of fun. I will be in a buff more often now.

I was in a Spit V and I started quite a bit lower than you - was trying to keep enough speed to get up to you and past to make a slashing attack from eithr your 2 or 10 oc position.

I think the 262 was Sac4( a squaddie) who was a bit miffed that he went boom. I was trying to time my attack with his but it all got a bit messed up. :)

Jamusta take a look at Scavengers posts. There's a link at the website. He has some stuff that is just classic.

His story on radios is awsome.
